Custom sub box - backseat L shape on seat style

I'm tired of dealing with under the seat subs and like to get a nice sub and be done with it. This is the type of box I want to build:

How would one start to figure out the dimensions to fit my truck? Should I use cardboard and build it using that then trace and cut the MDF?

BTW I'm only looking to do one 12 (not 2 as in the pic).

That's pretty sweet, but I hope you have a good alarm, tint the he*l out of your windows, and basically never park anywhere where anyone could look into it.

Yeah I agree with Chris.

Just measure between the center console and your seat and how wide/tall you want it to be. It'll need to be angled to fit on the seat also... Actually I think someone did this already with a couple of Sony subs. I'll try to pull up the thread as he gave some measurements in there as well to help you get an idea of what yours will be.

Keep in mind that you'll need to figure out a way to secure the box so it doesn't severely injure anyone if you get into an accident.

Didn't think about that, thanks I'll keep that in mind.

I have a 2 way alarm and dark tint in rear but my areas good. I don't wondering into camden or philly to often

I'm looking at throwing 2 10s (diamond subs) or maybe 2 12's depending on price. I had diamonds in my explorer and for the money they are very nice subs. I'll be off to grab some cardboard in the morning and start temping the layout.

Actually if you have pictures of it prior to carpet, would be more helpful. If you need to send them to an email address let me know.

Here's those pics, sorry it took so long im new to posting in threads. Anyways there are only 3 pics, not exactly what your links box looked like but it might give you an idea, its for a '99 ext. cab, with 2 10in Kicker CVTs. It's about 2.7 Cuft.

Nice looking box! I've never been a fan of front-firing, but I bet it's loud as hell!

kylek74 - Thanks for the pictures. So with it being front firing, how does it sound to you as the driver? Is the bass deep or do you ever get any sound distortion from them being right by you?

The bass is only distorted on a few songs with very low bass (these subs work better in a small box) but if I turn the volume down a bit it's fine. I set everything up how I wanted, (I listen to rap) but ya it's pretty dam loud for shallow mount 10s.

I built 1 like this in my last truck. 1cf was the finished volume sealed. Had a crappy 10" sub in it for the pic. I never finished installing the cup holders. The back leg of the box coming up from the floor is blocked off in the box so everything that sits on top of the seat is empty space. Was still able to fully open the front arm rest.

I'm working on a similar box right now to house a 12" L5. Going to be tight for space but I have a few ideas with the back seat so I can get a 3cf ported box in there. In the case of this box seen here, it does away with that seat anyways so why not go the extra step to use all that space. We'll see in a few days how it turns out.
On this box the top will be recessed and have a Formica finish with some sort of design to look better. New truck doesnt have the 60/40 split, has 2 buckets and a console so my options are a little better.

There's some sleek mirrors in the link that were part of the install. Anyone know where to get these or something similar? I like the way they look.

I'm in the same boat as you but I didn't have time time/knowledge to make a custom box so I ended up getting this one. Has enough airspace to fit a nice 12" sub (I purchased a JL 12W6 for it) and doesn't get in the way quite as much as the L shapes ones. The box should be coming in tomorrow so I'll be posting pics after it's all installed if you are interested at all.
