I was showing off my new system to a buddy and he asked about fixing a problem with his ride. He has a 98 Expedition with the Mach 1 system. According to him the sub sounds like it's cratered. I need to pull it and see if it's the sub, the amp, or the signal from the head unit.

Question is... if it ends up being the sub what's the best direct-replacement unit? I don't even know what size it is yet so I'm a little in the dark on where to even start, search-wise.

I finally got better and more decriptive information from him. His idea of "cratered" translates into a distinct and noticeable hiss through the sub at higher volume levels. Makes me suspect the sub amp or the head unit preouts have started to go bye-bye. Thoughts?

Im sure the equipment used is on the lower cost end (cheap) So at higher volumes its not going to be clean. That and its 12 yr old equipment that im sure has been beat on so its probably past its prime. It could probably use an overhaul which that depends on him and how much he wants to spend to make it better.

 

The stock sub in my 01Expo was crap and sucked even more at higher vol levels. I could see no way to wire an after market amp to the factory deck. The stock sub is a cheap 8in Chinese POS. I bought a DVD DD and a MTX pre loaded 10in enclosure and hooked it up to a dedicated alpine mono 450 v power. Its 10x better then the factory set hands down.
All said and done $1200 give or take 4 mtx 3 ways front and rear mtx sub knock off DD and I love it!!! I still have kick panels for components to hook up. I think your buddy will benefit from a similar set BIG TIME

FYI every single speaker and the deck all where ford oem and every single one was made either in china or mexico so it kind of no braner on the quality LOL
