Disappointed with JL10w7-3, Any ideas?

I have a Jl 10W7-3 installed in a sealed box at 1.242 cu.ft. Running on a 500/1 slash jl amp. In my Canyon, I had a JL Stealthbox (sealed) with a 10w3v3 on the same amp and I personally think it outdid the w7. Why is that??

The only other difference I have is the canyon was running a nice Pioneer headunit with a dedicated subwoofer output and the f150 still has the stock radio running the amp on the high level inputs off the rear speakers. Anyone have any ideas?

***Edit***

Another thing I just thought of. In the Canyon I used an ociloscope to set the amp. I turned up the gain untill I saw clipping and then turned it down. On the F150, I set the amp to 38.7ish ac volts as noted in the JL handbook. Would this make a big difference?

That has a big impact. That w7 is a big jump from the w3. More gain, better hu.Where are the rest of the amp settings at?

I started with the Stock settings for a 10w7. Infrasonic filter off, bass eq off, low-pass filter at 24db set to 85. At those settings you can hardly hear it. At the moment the low pass is set to 55 bass eq is on with a "q" of 1.1 center at 45 and boost at +12ish. Sounds better, but I think the Canyon still sounded a little better.

You think the headunit makes that big a difference? I figured the amp would do a better job at tweeking over the headunit. Would the CleanSweep fix or help my problem at all? I did notice that the factory headunit drasticly drops bass after about 5 bars of volume. From what I'm reading, the Cleansweep should take care of that.

Bump the crossover up to 80Hz, turn off bass boost. Raise gains accordingly. Also, 500 watts is ideally not enough power for the W7.

Another thing, the rear speakers may not be seeing low signal, so you get no volume rise for the subsonic frequencies as you turn the master volume up. Swap the head with something equipped with a dedicated sub output to fix this.

I'll prolly end up setting the gains for clipping like I did in the Canyon. I'll try the crossover. 500 watts is the recommended power rating of the 10w7. In fact, the 500/1 amp is recommended by jl for powering this sub.

I'm going to try the system with my buddies Pioneer touchscreen over the weekend. JL was closed, but if the Cleansweep will work, I'll prolly end up installing that. I'm looking at a new headunit next spring due to the cost. Purchasing a headunit to get me by would just be a waste of money. If the CleanSweep works as advertised, I'll always be able to find a use for it.

Alongwith what Msall said . yes the 500/1 is enough for that sub. I must say I have done this before with the w7's. Sad as it may be, if I know anything its about jl and pioneer. set the q a bit lower, raise gain, set center to 40, boost off for now, mess with lp till it sounds right. Still just get another hu.

the w3 is a more effecent sub than the w7.. this is why the w3 will outperform the w7 with the same power.

Negative. In this instance the sd and xmax are much more on the w7. So in theory the w7 needs more juice, unfortunatly even tho the w3 is more "efficient", the w7 is leaps and bounds above the w3.

just because a sub is rated for one power, doesnt mean it cant take more power and handle it well. For instance, the Alpine Type R. Rated at 500rms, sounds best with closer to 600.

So is it bad to send speakers 3x their rated power?

so your telling me a subwoofer that has a motor that is 3 times the size of the w3, is more efficient at lower power?

10w7's Efficiency (1W/1m)**: 84.3 dB SPL
10w3's Efficiency (1W/1m)**: 85.37 dB SPL

this is right from jl

No. If you were to play both it would be a bit easier to see. 1 db isnt much. Really you cant even compare the two. The w7 is power hungry. So no im not telling you that
