The difference in cone area between a 10 and 12 inch driver is pretty large, the 10 would have to have aa good bit more excursion and be in a larger box, likely ported, and on more power to provide more output than a type s 12. A single 12 type S will be louder than a type r 10 given similar power and box type, so 2 12s will be many times louder than the 10 obviously. Keep in mind its not always about mounting depth. There are shallowish subwoofers out there that can have pretty long throw.
Now, if you are limited on airspace, make sure to find a driver that can perform well in a smaller sealed box. If the box is smaller than recommended, keep in mind the subwoofer will have increased power handling and will take more power to get going.

Get the R and dont look back. I have never heard an R in any of the applications ive hooked them up in ever sound bad.
