What is the difference between ported and sealed sub boxes?

ported allows air to escape from the box which leads to more bass and if tuned right can sound as good or better than sealed, sealed is just what it says, sealed off, not as loud as ported but can sound cleaner

Couple more things to add....

Ported boxes generally require about 1/3 more cubic footage, not including the space taken up by the port itself.

Sealed boxes are easier to build {more fool proof}

Yes, ported is louder, and > can be < really clean and tight "IF" the box is calculated, and built correctly.... and almost always if the box is "specifically built for 1 particular sub woofer"..... NOT > Well I have this old box a friend gave to me, that will fit two 10"s...... Uhhhhh. No.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was playing some stuff on my setup last night (with a pair of ported 12" eD 13Kv.2's) and after 6 months, I still can't believe how tight, and snappy they are with kick drums and such..... yet I can play rediculous low frequency techno bass tracks, that just quake.
If you have the space, go ported. But make sure to get the right advice about cubic footage, and port size, for your specific subs..... then be meticulous with your box building.
Peace,
Fish
Here's mine :-)
BTW, this box is square as can be.... I hate barrel distortion from point and shoot cameras !
