I got them to install with a 1/4" plexiglass plate, I would never do it again. It took about an hour to get them positioned perfectly, to much hassle.

When or if I do it again I will use a 1" adapter this time. Just get a nice peice of treated wood to use.

The one inch plate will give the screws to hold the speaker in much more bite, plus it will make the speaker fit without cutting your door.

Post Will 6.5" fit in front door?

My local installer says the 6.5" speakers will not fit in the front doors without either cutting the door, or building a 1" deep adapter. Has anyone installed 6.5" speakers and whose adapter did you use, was it a direct bolt in.?

I cut a hole in the door as large as the whole speaker and mounted it flush with the door. If I had fit it in the existing hole with some sort of adapter, I don't think the door panel would have fit back on, and if it did the speaker cone would have hit the panel as it extended outward while playing.

That is a very nice job.

I don't think I have it in me to chop up my front door though.

Any other responses. It looks to me like the 6.5" is not going to work without modification. How about the 5.25", Can we assume that a simple mounting plate would work there. Are there any premade adapters. The response before said that had he used a thick wood adapter then he wouldn't have gotten on the door panel, how thick and adapter can you use. What is the distance between the factory door panel and the factory speaker?

A thick piece of mounting material would be need to make a 6.5 fit comfortably, without chopping or grinding the door.

A 5.25 would fit with a thinner plate, maybe like 1/4 inch or a little smaller.

Some places you can buy plates that will work, I prefer to just make them.

Thumbs up

Actually, DEI makes a 6.5" speaker that will fit in the door. It has a mounting hole diameter of 5.5" and a mounting depth of 2.45". That should fit perfect. I am getting a set myself tomorrow.

A local installer says he can get 6" Bostons in my Screw, but it will take some modification.

To put in the 6.5, I usually just trace the old factory 5x7 on 1/4" MDF and mark the screw holes. Cut out the 6.5 opening and the cut the 5x7 out and drill out the screw hole. I usually will paint this black so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb thru the grill. The MDF just draws to much attention. Then mount the plate in the factory location and then screw your new 6.5 in. I have mounted anything from Alpine 6.5's to FoCal 6.5 seps in them.

5.25" will fit in the door with an adapter that you can purchase at almost any place that sells speakers.

I'm new to the stereo section of the web board, but not to stereos. I've been doing this stuff myself for about 7 years. My MB Quart 6.5"s fit just fine in the front doors of my '00 Lariat with 1/4" plywood for a mounting plate (I was in a hurry!). I also have designed a downfire box with 2 polk db 12"s that fits under the xcab seat without sticking out at all (of course I had to raise the seat 1/2" with washers to get the 0.86 cu ft per side I needed). I hope that helps!

6.5 Do Fit F150 Doors

Houston Car Stereo just completed an install in my 2001 Lightning the Polk 6.5, which are very deep, fit perfectly with a 1/2" blade/adaptor.

This may already be SOP as the shop already had the wood brackets cut to size for my truck.

Good luck,
