Anyone heard of bass-blockers
I was looking at the crutchfeild website today and noticed that they sell bass-blockers for the 6x8 speakers. Since i have two 10inch Mtx subwoofers(lots of bass) mounted in the rear i dont want my 6x8 speakers trying to bass out when i pump up the volume. Does anyone know if that is what these things do.

JDm,
The Bass blockers do exactly what the name implies. You choose the cutoff range that you do not want your 6X8's to try to reproduce. Do you run your 6X8's off of an amp? If so, I think you run the bass blockers in line between your head unit's RCA pre-outs and the amp. I am sure they would work fine, do you have a crossover on your amp?

thanks for the reply SVT-Snake,
My 6x8's run off the 45x4 amp that is built into my pioneer cd-receiver. should I put them on all of my speakers or just the rear ones, because I have my sterio faded to the rear(to get more bass from the subs).

What about useing a seperate sub control where you can adjust just to sub from up front. You can adjust crossover, volume, etc...and not have to worry about the adjustments of your 4 speakers. The units are small and use a telephone type plug/wire to run whereever you desire. Cranking one song might have to muc bass where as another might not have enough even at tha same volume. Just a thought, but the bass blockers do work.

JDm,
The bad news is if you're running your 6X8's off of the amp in your deck, the bass blockers won't work. They are designed to go inline with the RCA pre-outs between a deck and amp. The good news is you can save yourself some money and shipping time by going down to the local stereo shop or Radio Shack and asking them for a set of caps. These are small resistors that you connect to your + speaker wire on each speaker and they block out some of the low frequencies. I don't know if the crossover slope on the bass blockers is 6db/octave or 12db/octave, but the caps will be 6db/octave. If it were me I would look for caps that would cut off in the 80-90 hz range. That ought to be just about right.

lok n load,
the info on the crutch feild site says "Bass Blockers are typically installed right before the positive speaker input terminal, in-line with the positive speaker lead." doent that mean they are installed right before the speaker. And also it says the they are 6dB. they also say that you can put them anywhere along the positive speaker wire.

AHHHHHHH,
I had seen some other things that were called bass blockers. They basically looked like a 6 inch rca extension and were designed to be a cheap alternative to an electronic crossover. It sounds like Crutchfield is talking about the caps like I explained above. You can find those at pretty much any stereo shop. I wouldn't pay for the shipping.

Bass blockers are a waste of time IMHO
the power from the deck is so little it wont hurt anything anyhow.
If you are running off an amp use an electric crossover or an amp that has one built in.
45x4 is a joke.
No deck can do much more than 14Wx4 true rms power.
A switching power supply is required to get more than 14W (built into most amps)
