Post Component Speaker Placement

I am installing Infinity Kappa 5x7 component sets in my front doors. I mounted the mid-range in the factory holes for convenience. I attached long wires to the tweeter enabling me to move them to different locations within the cab to find the best location imaging. The best locations I have found is on the kick panels pointed at the opposite seat's head rest. This gives the least path difference between the two tweeters.

Before I drill my kick panels, does anybody else have any suggestions for tweeter locations which will yield good imaging.

Also, anybody ever consider installing a center channel to cement the soundstage in the center of the dash?

I think my tweets will be safe mounted on the kick panels. I will try a few more mounting positions tomorrow and then drill.

As far as the 6x9s in the rear, you don't want to play the rears loud at all. It will mess with your front soundstage. Use them for rear fill and play them really low.

I've got Polk 572a's in the back. I have them disconnected now but plan to use them for rear fill after I get my front speakers placed and adjusted. I will low pass the rears and play them really low. Just enough to add depth to the soundstage. I read where you can put tape over the rear tweets to act as a low pass crossover. I guess that is called and adhesive crossover . I will try this and see what happens.

ALA G8R,

I am glad to see this post. I started a thread on imaging a while back. I am very particular about my tunes. I also experimented with the tweeter location. I ended up mounting them on a custom bracket I made.I am using the 5 1/4 Infinity Kappa component setup. I mounted the set on a piece of 3/4" material. Using the outline of the 5X7 and cut and sanded to a wedge 1/8 > 3/4. Then I made the cutouts for the speakers. Placing the tweeter closest to the front of the truck. Then adjusting the tweeter to the center of the truck towards the dome light. The difference is night and day!!

I considered putting the tweeter in the kick panels. I even went as far as ordering the Q-Forms. I was not happy with the quality of the Q-forms and I think the speakers will take a beating in that location!? At least in my truck!?

Check out this site. Great information: http://www.audioreview.com/techtalks...techtalk.shtml

I am considering installing Infinity Kappa 6X9's in the rear!? Any Ideas??

Todd

ALA G8R,

Let me know how it works!! I think you can eliminate the the highs from the tweeter by using a capacitor in line. I was considering the 6x9's more for range than volume!? Also, I have heard that you don't want the tweeter too far away from you mid.

Look forward to hearing how it sounds!!

Todd

Todd,
Actually an inductor in line will act as a low frequency short circuit / high frequency open circuit (low pass). A capacitor in line acts as a low frequency open circuit / hi frequency short circuit (high pass). My amp manual gives values to construct both low pass and high pass passive crossovers. If interested, tell me the frequencies and I will provide the values.

Did you angle your mid range speakers with your adapter? That is a neat idea.

Hey ALA G8R,

Yes, I did angle the mid with the bracket. This way the speakers aree not firing at each other. There is quite a bit of room behind the panels. I then mounted the tweeter right next to it. The way the speakers sit mow they are firing up towards the dome light. Awesome concert hall. I just can never stop tweaking it!!

After you mentioned the "adhesive crossover." I remembered reading about tweeters blocking mids and lows from the rear. Do you know what freq the tweeters start at? For optimal imiging it may be best to eliminate a certain range?
Some type of band pass. Rear high pass off the amp at 70/80 and cut out the highs at??????

Todd,
You definately don't want human voice to be noticable from the rear. I was thinking about bandpassing from 90Hz to 260Hz. My Audio Control EQx does the 90Hz and I was gonna use a 12dB/octave low pass. But first I am gonna tape the tweeters and see what that does. My Polk 572a's crossover at about 3kHz. I don't know where the Kappa coaxial's crossover at.

I put my tweets in the doors in front and slightly below the mid-range. They poit to the dome light. Sounds great. I'm gonna find some way to angle the mid-range. That's a great idea.

ALA G8R,

Now you got me thinking. Perhaps 5x7 in the front?? Let me know how you mount the tweeter behind the door panel?? It must have a clear shot...... Did you say you mounted it under the woofer??

Todd

ALA G8R,

Easy, remove the 5x7 lay it on a piece of 1" thick wood. Playwood or #2 pine will do. Draw the outline of the speaker including the location of the screw holes. Cut outside of line with jig saw. Cut out middle hole. Then mark side of wood 1/8 > 0. I then used a band saw to make the initial cut then sanded.I suppose you could sand the whole thing!? It really isn't much work for the results?? When drilling the srew holes you will want to go a little big. I also threw some "DynoMat" over the bracket for good measure.

I have been looking at my doors and they don't seem to be symetrical. i.e. Driver and passenger side are not MIRROR images? Did you find a location that was perfectly symetrical? If so how did you measure it??

Thanks,
Todd

Todd,
You are right, they are not symmetrical. I eye balled it and got real close. There is no more than 1/2 inch difference. Install looks even.

Todd,
Sorry for the confusing message. I bought the Infinity Kappa 57.1cs in order to utilize the factory mountings. I mounted the 5x7 mid range drivers in the factory locations. I flush mounted the tweeters on the door panel just forward of the door panel grill opening.

Now I am trying to figure a way to angle my mid range drivers in the factory locations.

Thumbs up

I Flush mounted my tweeters between the door handle and front of the door on the dark "insert".
Tweeter sits above and slightly forword of the power window switches.
Great imaging and high frequency distribution.

Thumbs up

I went to a local truck / car audio show over the weekend. Never been. Some pretty wild setups! Anyway, one thing that caught my eye was an F-150 with the tweeters mounted in those add-on instrument pods. Sounded very nice and looked great.

Just thought I would share that........

Be well,

Todd

Todd,
What add on instrument pods are you talking about? Where are they located?

Do you feel the 1 farad cap is a good bang for the buck?

Thanks,
