Components vs Coaxials...worth the $$$?
I'm planning a new audio system for my truck and had a question about speakers. Right now, I'm leaning pretty heavily towards a 2 pairs of Sony Mobile ES speakers (6.5 inch) for the front and rear. I'm know I'm going to put a pair of 3-way coaxials (XS-V1650G) in the rear speaker locations, but I'm unsure if I should get another pair of them for the front, or maybe get some components (XS-HF78) instead. I was wondering if the components really sound THAT much better, considering they are about $170 more expensive than the coaxials (at Crutchfield anyway...I'm not going to be buying them from Crutchfield, just using it as a reference). I'm not what you would consider an audiophile...just someone looking to build a nice sounding system, so I don't know if the components would really be worth it to me or not. Also, how difficult is installation of components? I'm relatively new to this stuff and am a little nervous about cutting holes in my door panels! Thanks for any info!

LuvTheC,
Thanks for the info...here are my plans (as of today
)...
Sony Mobile ES head unit (I think it's the CDXC760...it's a couple of years old).
Sony XM-405EQX Amp (40x4 + 100x1)
2 8" Polk db subs (under the rear seat)
Sony Mobile ES XS-V1650G speakers (3-way 6.5" coaxials) in the rear speaker locations
Either Sony Mobile ES XS-V1650G (3-way 6.5" coaxials) or Sony Mobile ES XS-HF78 (6.5" components) in the front speaker locations
Someday, a mini-disc changer in the center console.

A cheap set of component spaekrs will run circles around most coax.
I even bought a Roadmaster component set (I never heard of them either)form mcmelectronics.com for $75.00 and they sounded better than any coax I ever had in there.
I was using them in a 92 nissan truck.
I htink mcm still carries thes speakers and I am seroisly considering buying anther set.
putting the tweeter where you want it makes all the difference.
Crossover quailty much better also.
Most genric component sets are made by a major speaker company.
This is not true of coax.
Cheap coax is no better than ford "premuim" speakers. (we all know how crappy these are)
Go components your ears will thank you for it.

I have to agree. Imaging, Imaging, Imaging. The components do sound good. Play around with tweeter location and find the "sweet spot." There are a few coaxials setups that do sound very good. However, I feel they are over rated and over priced.

Good morning MattT,
Where speakers are concerned it is really personal pref. "What sounds good to you."
Imaging is another part of the equation. Components do seem to provide better imaging and the rear speakers are for fill only. Are you considering a sub? Amp? Many of the higher end speakers require more power than can be had off of the factory system......
no need to cut up door panels. You can install components behind the door panel. Check the threads regarding speaker placement and imaging.
Good listening,
Todd

Just installed Memphis componet set today.
Cost $165.00 at local stereo shop.
Sound AWESOME !!!!!!
Model #ARCS50
5.25 woofer
2" dome tweeter
At this price definetly worth doing components
I tried Kicker 5x7 coax but replaced w/components
I don't even think it is possible to get decent sound out of a coax in the factory location.

I have to disagree BIGTIME w/the statement made above that Co-ax's are "no better" than stock premium speakers. This is in no way true whatsoever. I just replaced my stock premium speakers w/some Kenwood Excelon's 5x7's all 4 of them. The difference is amazing ! Let me put it this way. I plan to add an amp to them, but there is such a big difference now that I am in "no hurry" to do it. And I even have a 400w subwoofer amp pumping into a Polk db series 10" sub under the rear seat !
Components are great yes, but these kenwoods have a 15 degree angleable tweeter to help sound imaging ! Crystal clear too !!!
