component speakers and crossover

How close should the crossover be to the speaker/tweeter. Essentially how many feet of speaker between the crossover and speaker terminal generates the best SQ in your speakers, and at what point do you beging to sacrifice SQ for storage of the equipment. I want to mount my crossovers on the amp board behind the rear seat of my Screw and run the wire from there to the fronts and rears. Would that work or do i need to co-locate the crossover with the speakers? Thanks...

They dont have to be that close and you could have the cross over where ever you liked. Either way the signal will have to go from the amp to the speakers no matter what way you do it. Just make sure you keep cable lengths a close as possible.

doesnt matter with the distances in the pickup. ther are two ways to do the components crossovers,, mount behind seat like u said, or if molex is an issue, mount inside the doors themselves to eliminate the extra run of speaker wire. instead of putting two wires in each door, u only need one speaker wire from door to amp the only negative is any water ever gets in there. in my suv its been ok.

This is not an appropriate solution. Its hell on the XOvers every time you open/close the doors. Because it doesnt have anything to stop momentum outside of itself when the doors are shut. Its like hitting a brick wall everytime. That and the stock wire should not be used for much use over 75wRMS. Drill the molex if you are diagnosed with the EffinMolex Syndrome.

So if i mount the Xovers on the amp board behind my rear seat, and run the new 16awg speaker wires to the doors, it would be fine. FYI the speakers will be powered by a JL 300/4 using all 4 ch, so 75 to each.

on my pickup i ran two 12awg speaker wires. the suv has had the crossovers in there for 5 yrs, u are correct not the best place, the suv is still fine, im not messin with it anymore, only concerned with the pickup. i respect ur advice, always listened to... all i ment with the extra run of wire was u didnt need two in each door. i would never use stock wires with an amp at all.... 5yrs ago all i knew was distortion and rattling the hell out of everything, little older now. prolly not the best advice with em in the doors, my fault

Mine are mounted under the rear backseat under my amp. I bought a little wire mesh box, turned it upside down and mounted my amp too it. The crossovers are under that. 06 SCREW

I know Low E is big on putting the Xovers on the wall and I respect that to the fullest extent. But, when mine come in, I'm dropping them whors under the window roll down/ door lock plate. I guess I will just have to learn the hard way. BTW Low E, your knowledge is greatly appreciated by me and others on this board.

When I had passives, my crossovers were on the rear wall next to my amp. Since the components were only seeing 100w each, I used 2 runs of 16awg into the doors.

Now fully active with over 200 watts per front speaker, I have 12awg run everywhere.

Please dont do that. It really might take an extra 2 hours... But it will be done right and solidly. Why risk ruining the speakers? Oh and the xovers are also much more suseptable to water damage in the doors as well.

Ok, I've been doing some looking around and decided to keep the x-overs out of the doors. I have really been studying the art of building door pods and that is definitely something I want to do and think I really could do, eventhough I've never glassed. If I am going thru all that trouble, I might as well do it all right and put everything on the back wall like Ive seen. Should I run the Streetwires 12 ga or go another route?

Nice, yeah, Stinger was what I was thinking of, not streetwires. Thanks for the suggestion
