Replacing sub in stealthbox...

This is just an FYI post...

This is for anyone that has an older JL stealthbox with a 10W3v2 2ohm DVC loaded in it.

I have had mine for a about 6 months running on a JL 500/1. I have had to turn the gain way way down to keep it from distorting.....So being bored one day.. I decided that I wanted to replace it with a 10w3v3 SVC...... I did the right thing and sent an email to JL to see if the new stealthboxes have the same airspace and if the 10W3v3 would be a good choice of replacement :

This is the response from the JL tech rep:

Hi Jason,

1. Would my 500/1 be a good match for the W3?
Yes, really your 500/1 would be the perfect match...
2. Would I notice an audible difference?
It is an improved woofer (the W3v3) but I’d be making an assumption to say that you’d definitely notice it, most do. The woofer is more refined and, detailed.
3. The v2 I have is a DVC 2ohm wired to 4ohm... Since they only make the v3 in a SVC should I go for the 4 ohm?
The 4ohm will give you more flexibility should you decide to add another in a future vehicle or, sell it once you’re done with this vehicle.
4. Is the new JL stealthbox the same as the older models like what I have, as for airspace and mounting depth?
Yes they are the exact same enclosures. The mounting depth in the new one is the exact same as the one you have.

Okay there are a few problems

Well here are the issues....

The mounting depth of the V3 is more then the V2.....I knew this... but going on his response.. I purchased one thinking that there would be enough room.

Problem #1 --NOPE !!!!DOES NOT FIT !

It required me to fabricate an 3/4'' MDF spacer ring to keep the magnet off of the back of the enclosure. The W3 was not even close. It needed about a 1/2'' of help. After that was done I had some black foam tape and silicone I used to complete the seal. It looks really good and you cannot even tell that the thing has been modified. So the moral of the story is to measure for yourself before you assume that it will work. I actually bought the V3 before I even took my V2 out.

Problem #2
Original 8-32 1'' sub mounting screws were not long enough. Had to go to Lowes and get some 8-32 x 1 1/2''

Results :

Pretty big improvement. I found the largest improvement on the accuracy. I have been so dang impressed with this thing.. The stealthbox has been in for 6 months...but I still find myself skipping though my mp3's to find the songs that really sound good. So if anyone needs a JL 10w3v2 DVC 2ohm let me know. I also was able to turn the gain up some more

He obviously didn't know what he was talking about when he said the two versions were the exact same. Having owned both the 10w3v2 stealthbox and the 10w3v3 stealthbox I can assure you that the v2 stealthbox was a bit bigger and had more airspace. They do sound great though! Do you have a grille on the 10w3v3? If not check to make sure it is not hitting the floor when playing it hard (especially since you installed a 3/4" spacer ring).

So JL says the 500/1 is a perfect match to the v3?

thanks for the tip. I wouldnt mind switching to the w3 as well. My 500.1 is just too much for the w2.
