Question Need some help deciding on a sub setup.....

I've got a couple different options here and need some advice before I start purchasing things. Basically the two options are this:

1) Buy an unloaded MTX Thunderform and put a Polk MM1240 sub in it. The specs on this sub can be found here: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107MM12...=mm1240&tp=111

2) Buy a JL 13TW5 and build a box to go under the rear seat. The specs on thi sub can be found here: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_13613TW...h=13tw5&tp=111

I really like the Thunderform/Polk option but I've never heard a Polk sub and don't know what to expect. I also don't know if the Thunderform being plastic will create any negative effects on the bass.

I also like the JL 13TW5 but the price is quite a bit more expensive and the box will stick out from under the seat some.

Which of these two options will have the most output? I've done a lot of thinking and I don't really want to go to a dual sub setup and the box must stay under the rear seat because it looks so much cleaner IMO. I listen to a wide range of music; rock, country, rap, alternative, etc -- pretty much anything except classical. I'm using an Eclipse ZA1200 sub amp so I have plenty of power on tap.

Sorry for being long winded!!

Nice amp!

Between those 2 choices i would choose the JL. And to answer your question, the JL will have more output.

But if i were you, i wouldn't rule out a dual sub setup. with only a single sub, there is sound difference between the passenger and driver side of the cab. With 2 subs it fills the cabin a lot better...trust me. Ive been through multiple single sub setups and now have 2 subs...much better with 2. They wont stick out of you get 2 nice 10s, and you can mount your amp on the wall behind the backseat.

That was the only reason I was ruling out dual subs; amp location. I've always ran two subs in all my stereo systems and I've always placed my amp under the driver/passenger front seat. This truck doesn't have enough room for my amp under the passenger seat -- the power/heated seat harnesses are in the way.

I've got a couple sets of 10" subs that I could use. I've got some RE Audio SE10's that I could use if I lifted the seat or I've got a set of Eclipse SW7104 Aluminum subs that I could use without a seat lift kit. I was worried that they would hit the floor while playing them loud because they have 1.40" of total excursion.

Do you think the single Polk (12") or JL (13.5") driver would be as loud as the dual 10's?

No shallow sub, especially single, will match the output potential of 2 standard subs. And those REs will bang real hard and sound pretty darn good doing it - if youve got them lying around Id use those before dropping big bucks on new equipment.

I have heard that same thing several times and then I've heard some others say that the JL 13TW5 is the one and only exception. I wish one of the JL dealers around me had one of these woofers hooked up so that I could compare it to a standard woofer and listen for myself. I think I'm going to rule out the 13TW5 solely based on the price of the driver. So now I guess I've got three options:

1) Thunderform/Polk 12" sub

2) Underseat box with (2) 10" Eclipse Aluminum subs (amp on back wall)

3) Underseat box with lift kit and (2) 10" RE SE10 subs (amp on back wall)

I'll probably also throw an Eclipse EA4200 in the mix to power my Infinity components and coaxials.

Any more opinions/advice?

For what it's worth, I put in a 12" Rockford Fosgate shallow mount sub and love it. I am using a RF T500-1bd(400 watts) to drive it. I started with the Pioneer shallow mount and I hated it, but the RF sounds ALOT better.

Well I sort of went in a totally different direction here. I was getting online to order the seat lift and came across an awesome deal on a brand new JL Stealthbox with the new 10w3v3 driver. The retailer is an authorized dealer and they are having a 25% off Thanksgiving sale that ends tonight and I just couldn't pass up on the deal. I've already had a ported stealthbox with the 10w3v2 driver in it and it sounded perfect. Wish I wouldn't have sold it but I did.

Anyone need a pair of RE SE10's, Eclipse 10" Aluminums, or an Eclipse ZA1200 Amp?
