5x7 is the stock size for all 4 doors.

I recommend switching to 6.5" though.

To fill up the HU area you want a double din HU. An after market HU isn't needed for an amp and sub, but can help in the overall quality of your sound.

5x7's and 6x8's have the same mounting pattern.

but you dont need to buy a double din. if you get a single din you will also buy a mounting kit that will put a little pocket above or below the unit
so you can buy either single or double din

That's correct. I thought he was saying he wanted a full HU like the stock one.

Thanks to everyone for the input, what do you guys think about leaving the stock h/u and upgrading the speakers and adding subs? or do you think you gain more by adding h/u

advice on order of upgrade opinions would be great. also subs for 04 screw advice? 12s wont fit without raising the seat i hear, what is your advice?

If you are going to add subs to a stock HU, you can do it--but my advice would be to by a new HU and go from there. If you are going to put in new speakers, an amp,and a sub(s), why not spring for a new HU as well---you will have better control over your sound. A New HU will better enable you to create the sound that you want.

A new headunit even with Stock door speakers will sound a LOT better. New speakers with the stock headunit will sound better. You're asking about a whole audio system, I see no point in spending all the money to upgrade everything but the weakest link, the headunit.

definitely, the HU is always the place to start.
for me it goes HU, then subs then speaks, but thats cause im a basshead
if you are looking for sq, then do HU, speaks, then subs. with good speakers and sound deadening you can get great sound from just your doors

I'm trying to convince my girlfriend that right now. She bought an '08 Focus and wants a true SQ system but wants to keep that factory h/u. I told her its not possible.

You can use a Digital EQ on OEM HU.

JL is just one brand. JL AUDIO'S EQ...
