Question Speaker Ohm question...

Hi guys

I already have some 4 ohm Infinity Reference 6812cf's in the front.

I just bought some 2 ohm Infinity Reference 6822cf's for the back.

This is all run off the OEM head unit.
I know you guys use some bling, bling goods......my question isn't about speaker quality.

Question is: Will the 2 & 4 ohm play nice together??

Thanks for any help everyone !!!!

This is Infinity for you... They say it will... The 2 ohm will over power the other.

X2
also; since your running your other 2 speakers at 2ohm. it will start to distort faster at higher volumes. only because the head unit is rated at 4ohm stereo.

Youll most likey kill that stock HU with a 2 ohm load on the back channels....I sure wouldn't use them unless you want to be buying a new HU in the close future.

Return the for the 4 ohm version.

What infinity does is have a 2.4-2.8 ohm speaker. Then, they say okay with the wire resistance it will show approx 4 ohms to the HU... Therefore, safe to use...

It works but its a crap shoot for Infinity guessing wire gauge and length... I HATE THE INFINITY DIVISION of Harmon Kardon.

Ahhh, never realized that. Interesting. So riddle me this...if you have them hooked to an amp that is 'sensing' 4 ohm, or whatever you want to say, whats the point of even having a 2 ohm version...

Okay, which will get more power: a 2.4 ohm speaker showing 4 ohms or a 4.1 ohm speaker showing 5.7 ohms?

I HATE INFINITY. Really do. But in theory its a brilliant idea but in a practical arena its not as smart...

Ex1: 2001 Ford Mustang non-amplified. Front doors 10 ft from radio, and rear spks 25 ft. With the wire resistance the 2.4 ohm spk is showing (lets say... Im making these wire resistance #'s up) 3.7 and 4.5 ohms (3.7 and the 4.5 are within the acceptable ranges of resistance) Versus a 4.1 ohm spk with 5.4 and 6.2 ohms... It works out in Infinitys favor here. Radio puts out more power and you have gotten closer to what the radio can handle.

Ex2: 2003 Jeep Liberty, Infinity System. Amplifier 2 inches from speaker on front door and 13 ft from back doors. With the wire resistance the 2.4 ohm spk is showing 2.5 ohms and 3.6ohms. Versus a 4 ohm spk with 4.1 and 5.3 ohms. Now the aftermarket Infinity is too much for the amp and is causing it to run hotter = more wear and tear = premature failure and protection often.

In Ex1, Infinity's logic worked out, got more power and was safe on the HU. But in Ex2, wire resistances didnt provide enough resistance and overpowered the amplifier and killed it... Whos fault, the consumer, the installer or should it be Infinity because it advertises it being safe with 4 ohms...

(In all actuality, the speakers in the Jeep Liberty with the Infinity system are 1.8 ohms. And the Infinitys are perfect for that application. But it was for the idea of wire tolerances, I said they were 4 ohm.)

So its just a normal speaker and Infinity pretends to have something special ehh....

Here I thought it was some miracle design, and all they are doing is factoring in the wires resistance

Thing is....wire doesnt really add a whole lot of resistance, and when they go and advertise their 2 ohm speaker as being able to run fine on a 4 ohm min. HU and you only have a short run to the HU, your not going to have near enough resistance, as in your Jeep example, and have people frying stuff.

As you said, in theory, with a long long run of wire, great idea that you can do with any speaker...but in Infinitys case, not so much. Infinity has a 'beginer' fan base who isnt quite as apt to understand the whole concept if you ask me.
