Guys,

I just purchased an AVIC-D3 and I want to upgrade the speakers in my doors. I am wanting to run them soley off the head unit itself (no amp). With that being said, I have a few questions:

1. Should I stay with the 6"X8" coaxial speakers, or go with a 6.5" round coaxial with adaptor plates? I know there are more options out there in 6.5" speakers but I don't want to lose any of the little amount of bass that the factory 6"X8" speakers produce (I know it's not much to begin with, but I don't want a "thumping" stereo system, I just want to hear a little bass).

2. I have looked around for drop-ins that will fit the factory location and found these speakers so far that require little power:

- Pioneer TS-A6871R 6"X8" 3-WAY - 50 Watts RMS

- Boston Acoustics SX85 5"X7" 2-Way - 50 Watts RMS

Any thoughts?

I was happy with my old Boston Acoustics.

 

I really recommend amping them when you get a chance, some of that mid and midbass will come back with power.

6.5's are more linear and better made for SQ arenas.

 

i used infinity reference speakers and 2 12" kicker comp vr down firing underneath the back bench with a 800w amp with a bass boost remote button and have no complains. its clear and when the bass get too loud
i turn it down with the button.

 

Did you have the 5" x 7" speakers with no amp?

I have thought about putting a small 4 channel amp in but I have a regular cab and I like all the space I have behind the rear seats. I was considering putting one under the center seat if possible, but I am worried about air circulation. Those 4 channel amps are pretty decent size too though.

 

I have the Pioneer Z2 with the Boston Acoustics S85's and it sounds sweeeeeet. I added an amp but only to push my sub. If I remember correctly the S85's max rms rating is 35 watts. With that being said I think that the Z2 and maybe the D3 pushes like 22 watts rms. That's pretty close with no amp. Go with the S85's even though your not using you max power available. Trust me, they will sound beautiful.

I dont care what anyone says, 20 watts rms headunit power and 20 watts rms aftermarket amp power, are not the same.

Yes, Im sure they sound great without an amp, but I would always amp my speakers.

Maybe look into the polk db570/db571's. Or maybe the Alpine Type S's. I have used both sets and they are great off of headunit power and of course sound better with an amp.
