*Systems for Idiots* teach me!

teach me about everything you know. Im looking to purchase a sub/amp setup soon and would like to install it myself. Im more of the mechanical type but would like to understand all this electrical crap.

So far I am looking to purchase 2 ED 11kv.3, a SCS EXT cab box, and a US amp 1000w. I know Ill need wiring but what else do I need. What kind of wiring do I need (links would be good )? Like whats a crossover? Do I need a new battery? Do I need to power my amp? (proabably stupid questions )

Im looking to mount my amp on the rear wall. How should I go about doing that? Should I use sound deadening?

teach me!

btw Im using an avic-d3 if that matters.

If your really wanting to understand this stuff a little better, I would suggest maybe checking out a few sites, such as:

BCAE1.com
Crutchfieldadvisor.com
and just searching on here, because we have covered tons of things on here.
Once you read up a little Im sure you will have more specific questions that we can help with better than just "Teach me what you know"

Hey man thanks a lot that would really help but I want to try to keep it in this forum to help others out as well and so I could refer back to this when I install my setup myself. I have a lot of questions and dont know where to start but here are a few. Im sure I will have a lot more once I start doing the install.

-If I have a box, amp, and subs, what else would I need? What kind of wires? Where can I get them? Do I need a crossover? How does that work?

-How do I mount my amp to the back wall of the cab? I have seen people use thin plywood and then mount the amps to that. What kind of wood should I use and where can I get it? what kind of screws do I use to mount to the truck?

-What do all the terms mean? voice coils, crossovers, "channels", ohms, etc.

I know these are probably the stupidest questions but hey we were all newbies at one time.

Any other info would be good too.

Dave if you are around in the Bay Area this break i'd be more then willing to show you a bunch of stuff/help you wire up your system when you get it. I can tell you what all those goofy terms are and show you first hand what they mean, using equipment. I might be getting my truck dyno'd down in Santa Clara/San Jose this break as well. shoot me a pm or somethin.

You will need a complete wiring kit, or else to buy everthing separate.
The wires you will need:
Power wire-1/0 gauge-Runs from battery to amp
Ground wire-1/0 gauge-Runs from amp, grounded to the body of the truck
Turn on wire-usually just a small 18 gauge wire-runs from turn on wire on back of head unit to REM on amp
Fuseholder for under the hood
Fuse of appropriate size
RCA (signal cables) Runs from the HU to the amp, carries the signal
Speaker wire-to hook the subs up to the amp.

Most any local car audio shop should have one, or else you can pick them up on ebay.

As for a crossover, you will not need one. That amp (as well as pretty much any amp made any more) has a crossover built into it. Pretty much all you need to do is turn a **** to set it where you want it.
What a crossover does is filter out frequencies above or below a certian point. For instance, with subs, you want them LOW PASSED, which means the crossover only allows frequencies BELOW a certian point, and 70-80 hz is a great number to start at. So say your subs are 'low passed at 70 hz'...that means the crossover is only letting the frequencies below 70 hz to the sub.
One more thing with crossovers is the slope. 6db, 12db, 18db, etc. Bassically, the higher the number, the quicker those frequencies will roll off and stop playing once they get past the crossover point.
Very very basic description there.

-How do I mount my amp to the back wall of the cab? I have seen people use thin plywood and then mount the amps to that. What kind of wood should I use and where can I get it? what kind of screws do I use to mount to the truck?

Mount a board with self tapping screws to the back wall of the cab. Make sure to screw the screws into a part of the back wall where the cab is DOUBLE walled...in other terms, so the other side of the screw doesnt stick outisde between the cab and bed.
You can use any kind of wood as long as it will hold the threads of the screw so the amp wont get ripped off. Amps can be damn heavy and rip screws right out of a piece of wood if it isnt strong enough.

-What do all the terms mean? voice coils, crossovers, "channels", ohms, etc.

There are tons of terms out there, best thing to do with those really would be to search.
