New Components Installed and I Screwed Up
New Components Installed and I Screwed Up
Well sort of anyways.
I installed a set of CDT CL61A's. I made a plywood adapter plate to install the woofers but instead of cutting up the door like most do I shaved a little off of the top and bottom of the speaker - probably <1/4" on each side at its deepest. I used my bench grinder to do this - took just a few minutes for each speaker.
My mistake was when I did the first one. After grinding I noticed a grinding sound coming from the woofer when I touched it with my finger. In this particular speaker their is a small gap between the woofer itself and a dispersion cone I guess they call it. Like a dumb *** I allowed the metal shavings to get down in there - probably stuck forever.
The 2nd one I covered up the woofer surface and no issue.
The good news is that these speakers sound awesome and I haven't even hooked up the amp yet. I am running them off of a new JVC KW... can't recall the model number but it is the JVC double din that has been talked about recently - I really like it. Problem is that during some frequencies you get a harsh hiss. Most of the time I can't hear it at all but it is there at times. I emailed CDT support and told them what I did and w/ in an hour emailed me and are allowing me to purchase one replacement speaker for $35 - guess it wasn't too costly of an F up but frustrating.
They sound good and I can get them fairly loud - probably as loud as I would listen to w/o distortion. Anybody run their components off of the head unit and only a sub off of an amp?

Ya youre lucky. That metal shaving would have killed your VC. Depends on the component set. Some HU put out enough clean power and some components have a low RMS point that its cool to do. My preference is always amped. But w/e floats ya boat.
