Four Speakers?

If I'm putting new speakers in, do I get front and back or just put more money in the front's. I see some folks don't use the rear. Also as for subwoofers, what would be a decent start up, one 12" or two 10" 's? Thanks.

I left my stock speakers in and my system sounds awesome, but the rears do need to put out alittle more since the bass is coming from behind, if you have the extra cash might as well replace the 2 rears...what cab size do you have? I have a XCab, (2) 10's and a downfire box under my rear seat that puts out plenty of bass and i can still hear whatever they are saying. I personally don't like the 12's output of bass, my friend has (2) 12's in his tacoma and i can hear alittle but there is to much distortion...all depends on what you like.

I have the Supercrew. It's for my son. I don't wanna shortchange him on the woofers but I don't want him getting a citation either. I'm just not up on this sort of thing.

Supercrewsound.com has a downfire box for, I'd get him that and if you do go with it be sure to tell them what subs your going to put in. Why 10's?
1: (2) 10's are obviously going to be louder than a single 12, given the airspace in the vehicle, they were built for smaller airspace.
2: Clarity : 10's are more accurate then 12's you don't get a distorted almost rattling noise.
3: They can fit right under the seat where as a 12 you would need to have the seat lifted.
If you want I could probably record the sound quality of my setup, might give you an idea on how loud it is inside and out and what you want.

I appreciate that but I think you've already sold me on the 10's. Thank you.

I agree with Rikidy on the 10's.

It also depends on what type of music he likes and his sound preferences.
I'm running a single 10" sub and it is plenty loud and well balanced with my fronts.
I don't do rap music though
I like hard and tight puncy bass that blends well with the fronts.
two 10's woule be overkill for me.

For rap or R&B, do up the two 10's and boom away.

10's sound no better or tighter than 12's. Its not nessecarily the sub size as it is more the box design. You can make a sub sound any way you want with a different box, that includes making a 10 sound boomy and sloppy and a 15 sounding tight and perfectly musical.

Two tens are going to kill a comparable twelve in output. Save his hearing and his money if you know he is going to crank it and get pulled over possibly and get a single 12 I say. The price of a single 12 will initially be lower than two 10s besides, or else you will have that much more money for a nice 12.

Most of us guys with no rear speakers are set up for a pretty much pure, all out sound quality setup, where rear fill can just screw up your soundstage and whack it all out...something the average listener usually isnt concerned with at all, or would never even notice the difference.

If its for your son I assume he will have people sitting in the back a lot, so some rear fill will be nice for that. You could put decent speakers if front and back, or else leave the stock ones in the back and put some nicer ones in the front.

You can make a sub sound different in many ways not only the box, some headunits have different options on how to tweak it to the way you want, how much gain and bass you have it set on the amp.
1) A box does affect the sound quality but so do other conditions.
Alot of things affect how it will sound.
- 1: Where is the sub facing?
- 2: What is the airspace in the vehicle?
- 3: Right combination of subwoofer and amp to power and not overkill or underpower.
Have you heard of anyone hurting there hearing off 10's?

Box more than anything, but thats not what we are talking about. You said 10's are tighter and better sounding that 12's, which is false.

If you dont think 10's can have the potential to hurt hearing then you havent heard enough 10s....

First, I said nothing about tighter or better sounding. It's all personal preferences and how your setup is. If you say that the box helps the quality more than airspace and direction of a subwoofer you need to try a bigger airspace or smaller with the same setup you have and notice the difference..then change in which direction the subwoofer is facing.
As for hearing problems any subwoofer could damage someones hearing, I could damage my ear off a tweeter, thats not the point though.

As for hearing problems...if you turn it up that loud to damage your ears your a moron and deserve it.

Yours truly

Changing the airspace of the box is what Im talking about when I say its the box (along with box build quality of course, and tuning freq. if its ported).
Changing the direction the woofer faces usually only makes a difference in output, although it can help muffel or hide some mechanicle noise, for instance if the sub is facing right towards you, and you change it to downfire or the like.

And explain to me how you are going to change the amount of volume you have (If I undersay correctly, this is what you are talking about now when you say airspace??)

As for hearing problems any subwoofer could damage someones hearing, I could damage my ear off a tweeter, thats not the point though.

Yet you gave me a "are you retarded' cyber look when I said that 10's could damage your hearing.

*sigh*
