Ported or Sealed?

Truck is a 2001 Xcab.

Ok not sure when I will get around to it but I am starting to think about my box now. I have my Empeg, amps, and 4inch seat lift in but no idea when I will get the time to install my components and sub. But in thinking about the box for the sub I am trying to decide on a ported or sealed box. I know the "on paper" differences but not sure how each is going to sound in my setup. My sub is a Fosgate T112D4 Power Stage 1 which will be pushed by a Fosgate 500BD. Components are Fosgate FNQ's 6.5's, they only got used about 6 months and then were stored and are still be in good shape. I will more then likely build 2 boxes, one ported and one sealed to see which one I like the best.

My main question is for the ported box, where would be the best place for the port? On the front, back, bottom, or side? Obviously if it was on the bottom would need a gap between it and the floor. I am planning on doing a down firing sub. I know normally the port should be on the same wall as the sub which in this case would mean putting it on the bottom of the box facing the floor. I just did not know if this would sound good and how much gap would need to be left between the port and the floor of the truck.

Did you leave a gap between the box and the seat brace? Which side , the center of the truck or the door side of the box?

I had the box built for me. The speaker is on my drivers side with the port hole on the opposite end of the box by the door.

How big of a box do you need ported???

The ported box I made for my last truck was downfiring, with the port shooting out the side, towards the passengers side door.

A lot of times there isnt room for a ported box, unless your willing to sacrafice, and a 4 inch lift may or may not be enough depending on what size box you need.

Personally Im a sealed type. Gotta have the low lows that a ported box isnt really going to give you.

same. plus in a ported box, the 45Hz-60Hz range is a ton louder then every other frequency.

For ported, I would put the port either down, or out the back. I think the jl stealthbox (that everyone pays so much for) is ported out the side towards the passenger side.

I prefer sealed myself, but give it a try...

I already have a 4in lift for the rear seat in. My box can range from 1.25 to 2.25cu/ft per the woofer's specs with a recommended of 1.75cu/ft. I measured things out a while back, can't remeber exact measurements, but do recall I should be able to hit the recommended ok. This would require a port of 4"x9". I know I have enough wood for 2 boxes and maybe 3. I will at least build 2 to see which I like the most.

You will get a better, cleaner sound from a sealed box.

As an x-installer an audio guru, I will side with the sealed side. Sealed boxes actually extend the life of a sub because commonly ported boxes cause subs to bottom out under heavy volumes. Beside sealed gives a cleaner 'kick'

I paid 275 for my box, but no i dont have any pics. Ported will give you more bass and everyone else has already said what you need to know for the sealed boxes. The box goes only to where the seat splits, about 3/4 of the way across. I have the 2 inch seat lift from lmi(PITA to install) and i only have room for one 10 solobaric in a proted box, where you could get two tens maybe two 12s in a sealed box with that same seat lift. If you got any more questions you can ask

Remmy, Im not sure i agree with that. A sealed box doesnt extend the life of the sub. A ported box can last the same amt if not more than a sealed box. It all depends on the size, driver, tune, port, infrasonic filter, Thiele/Small, way its played, amp size. Come on. You should know that. But a sealed 3.3 ft^3 box with a JL 500/1 and 10W6 will last less than a 1.5 cu ft box tuned to 32 hz with an infrasonic set at 31hz. Thats a given as long as the ported isnt driven with a clipped signal, gains set well and tuned right and the sealed is played as low as possible with clean signal. If all conditions equal ported has it.

Now depends on the sound you want, to where to port at. Boomy loud bass port in the front. Cleaner "tighter" bass port away from you.
