new sub/amp combo on the way
new sub/amp combo on the way
well after fiddling with my existing setup of the jbl cs300.1 and the jbl 10s in the supercrewsound.com box ive decided to step up the sub side of my stereo to something more powerful. i had messed around with switching from the dual 10s to a single 12, but ended up not going that route bc i didnt want to fool with lifting the seat to fit the deeper sub. then i had decided over the last couple of weeks that i would just buy a pair of jl 10w1 subs to replace my jbls to see if that satisfied me any better. the pair of jl subs was going to run something like 220 plus tax from my local dealer. then a friend of mine gave me a call tonight and said that he was getting rid of his stereo i had installed for him about six months ago b/c he was selling his truck. Its an Elemental Design Nine.2x amp with dual Elemental design 11kv2 subs. he said he would give me the amp and subs for 275 so i figure that there is no way i can go wrong on this deal, 2 subs and a bigger amp for just a little more than i was fixing to drop on a pair of bottom of the line subs from an overpriced company...the subs will fit in the existing box i have with plenty of room to breathe and ive got room behind my seat to mount the slightly larger amp where my jbl cs300.1 currently resides. i really dont like having two different brand amps but its a deal i feel i cant pass up, since the current amp is only rated at 300 watts but the elemental amp is rated at 600 watts which will easily drive the two elemental 10s and should have a good deal more output than my current setup. if i like this amp i may actually try and get a hold of the Nine.4 from elemental so i would once again have matching amps...haha..stupid i know but im just quirky about how my installs look, im very picky and in my opinion nothing looks better than amps that have the same lines and looks when properly mounted, especially if displayed. lets here some opinions, am i wasting my time changing the setup or should i expect pretty decent gains from stepping up the subs and amp to the bigger units?
i know this is somewhat different, but i have two 10's with an older alpine amp, ( the kind that get extremely hot ), but the amp is rated at 300, but only like 150rms. it all depends on what you rms is and what you speakers are rated at. if they are rated high enough, you will get a louder sound. but if you are going to stay with the 10's you wont have any lower tones.
my personal opinion, 10's have a better sound and response, but 12's have a wider range of tones.
hope that helps. i used to live in hattiesburg actually. you know spencer, or go to fat harry's or roper's any?

haha...yeah i have been known to spend a drunken night or two out ropers...ive been to fat harrys, but im not exactly a fan, im usually at mugshots or ropers unless a any of the bands that i know are playing in town at any of the smaller bars like the boom boom room, or the green room...
speaking of drunken nights, did you understand what i was saing about the rms. most people know and i assume you do too, but this is one of my drunken nights. and the last time i was at the green room... well i dont remember. if you know what i mean.
my tacoma i had before i had the supercrew had the fullout system with 3 TREO 12s vented in the ext cab...audiocontrol processors, alpine deck, jbl powevalve amps...that system rocked, but im not willing to lose my entire backseat for audio gear anymore. im sticking with the tens b/c i dont wanna mess with the backseat lift. im just hoping that i am able to tell a difference in the two setups, ive never done such a small change before. ive run all kinds of different setups in the past from single tens and single 12s to dual 10s and 12s to the 3 12s but ive never just swapped from one pair of dual 10s and an amp to another pair of slightly bigger 10s and a bigger amp immediately after. just wondering how much of a difference i should expect
i have a 97 with a thunderform box that sounds great. not too much, not too little. i also have a 05 that a friend of mine and i built and it also has two 10's. the only thing is that we had to take and put some 3/4 inch blocks under the back seat. if you look at my gallery, you can kinda see it in the middle pic on the top row. i took the pic without the carpet on there. you can also get the carpet at almost any autozone.
