The only downside to those is mounting them... you'd probably be forced to mount it behind the seat... then you've got ventillation issues (esp. with such a large amp)

That thing is a monster...that is why I am considering going to the Alpine PDX amps. Just thought in his case budget wise he could get one amp to run it all.

OK, here is what I have put together so far:

1.) Head unit: Pioneer DEH-P3900MP. It will control/charge my ipod like I wanted. It has the pre-outs I need for the sub too. Crutchfiled is just for research, but I have gotten great service in the past.
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-rAZVKnj...p?I=130DEHP390

price $130. Add another $50 for the ipod interface. That puts me at 180, which is 20 bucks under what I wanted to spend.

2.)Sub: Alpine PLT-5 LAT Subwoofer System. Its compact enough for behind my seat and has the amp with it, which is one less thing for me to have to wire. This should provide plenty of bass for me.
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-rAZVKnj....asp?I=500PLT5

price $600. There might be a better price somewhere, but I do want to buy from an authorized dealer.

That puts me at $780, $220 to spend on components and an amp for them. I was looking at these:
http://www.infinitysystems.com/car/p...=US&Region=USA

Price is a little steep, but it is from the manufacturer's site. Crutchfield doesn't have these listed, just the Reference series. Anyone know the difference?

So the only things left to figure out really is what comps (Kappa or Ref), where to mount the crossovers (Roll down windows), and what to do about an amp. The Kappas run at 90 watts RMS with a peak of 270.

So, let me know what you think. Ive already learned a lot from everyone. I think I made some progress on this sick day!

That's not a bad little system.

You can get that sub system for about $400 from non-authorized dealers... is a 50% markup worth the insurance???

That would make up for the amp price for the comps. Do you have any place in mind?

For a 4-channel amp, this is what I've got... it's awesome: http://cgi.ebay.com/US-Acoustics-USX...QQcmdZViewItem
Great value...

Infinity components tend to run a little bright.

Yea I have yet to hear a infinity speaker I've really liked. Rainbows are killer great if you can afford them.

Red face

Okay, so I ran the plan past the wife, and it seems she thinks I should spend some of that money on trivial stuff, like diapers and electricity. Go fig...

So my budget has been cut in half. Im going to spend about $180 on the head unit. So I have somewhere around $ 320 for 4 speakers and an amp to run them.

I know a lot of folks recommend the infinity kappas. Ive never heard them personally.

I went to the rainbow site. im pretty sure that I cant afford them, especially since they didnt list any prices.

So I am looking for some decent 5x7/6x8 speakers and an amp to power them. Any recommendations?

P.S. I installed some 3-way pioneers in the wifes truck last year and they sucked bad. But I didnt have an amp on them.

Here's a site to get a general ballpark of the rainbows.

You can also pm 6spdcoupe aka don here on the forums.

Would a component system without a sub sound similar to a 2-way speaker? In other words, if I still do components and no sub, is it going to sound like a$s?

No, it will not sound like azz. I ran components only (no sub anyway) for a couple months and it sounds fantastic, you just dont have a WHOLE lotta bass. Mine are crossed over at 63 hz, so it did play most lower frequencies, but not way down low like a sub does.

Depending on where your HPF is set, they can play the same frequency range as a set of 2-ways.

Get a set of Rainbow SLCs and a nicer, cheap amp from someone *cough*me*cough* and you will have a nice little setup till you can afford to add a sub and second amp to really bring out a full sound

That sounds right up my alley. The SLC 238's have a max of 150 watts. What do you think is needed, as far as an amp?

Thanks for the help by the way.
