My Install from Hell

So, I installed all my amps, speakers and subs. Got the subs working great with the kicker kx850.2 but the problem came when I installed my kicker 350.4. The amp was bad and blew out the preouts (both sides) on my kenwood ddx7015. I got the amp off an ebay store (this is my first bad expierence). The amp has a warranty and I'm confident that I will be able to get a new amp or my money back, but is there ANYTHING I can do for the headunit. The ebay store is a big one (hifisoundconnection) with a customer service line, but they are closed right now b/c of the holiday.

Some questions are:

1. Whats the most effective way to approach the customer service? Should I email them or call them?

2. Do you think I can get anything for the damages to the hu?

3. Is it easy/not very $$$ to repair preouts or should I get a new hu?

1. Call them most definatley...email is just more of a PITA than anything when it comes to something like this. Be calm and courtious and it will go a lot smoother.

2. I wouldnt count on it, but just mention it and ask them if there is anything they can do for you since the amp was at fault for the problems with the HU.

3. Your best bet is to call Kenwood and ask about it.

If this ebay store happened to sell the same HU you have, maybe they would work something out and send you a new HU like it, and you send them back yours so they can do something with it...if they are nice enough they might possibly do that, never know.

If the headunit is under warranty just go with kenwood repair. I can't see how the amp would have blown your outputs since the the amp doesn't have any way of putting power out of it's rca connections. Do call the warranty company and be nice about getting the amp replaced. Chances are the seller can't do anything for you but kicker might if the seller was authorized.

im going to second what impact said here, i dont see any possible way for an amp to damage your preamp outs on the headunit...given that you hooked everything up correctly. even not hooking everything up correctly you should still be fine, the worst you could have done was send an preamp out signal from the amp back into the headunits preamp in, but thats only if the amp has a preamp out passthru to go to another amp on it. but even with all that i dont think its feasible to have blown out your preamp outs, maybe some weird noise at most.

I once blew the RCA outputs on my headunit... It was funny the way it happened.... I ended up just using the rear outputs instead of the fronts until I bought a new headunit.

Anyway, the way I did it was.... I had accidentally "dropped" the 1/0 power wire while putting it into the fuse block and it happened to land on the RCA cables (I was using some Stinger metal-covered RCA cables). Needless to say, the RCA outputs fried and the fuse busted. Luckily the amp didn't suffer the same fate because the Y-cable fried first.

It is certainly possible, I guess, the Amp would have had a "short" inside of it to do the same thing. However, it is highly unlikely, and unless you can PROVE this is the case, don't expect any money for damages to the headunit. If I was a betting man, I would guess you did the same stupid thing I did, and may not have even realized it!

If for some reason you can not just simply use the rear RCA outs (it has the same signal, it just limits your front-rear fading), then you would need to buy a new headunit.

Good luck.

i think he is wanting to use front, rear, and sub preouts off his headunit...to maintain full control of levels from the headunit...im pretty sure that was a 4 channel amp and a sub amp in the pic...but i could be wrong

your right

I took my truck to a professional audio place and they took a look at it. They said the L and R preouts were done and the amp was a lemon. They also said that it was very possible that the amp was responsible for the blown preouts for some reasons I did not really understand. They also rewired my hu some how and I have music now but its real bad quality (said it was a temp fix). I asked them how they did it and I got confused.

I Feel your Pain Bro! i took a kenwood Amp to a So Called Professional store ( HHGregg if you really want to know) Don't Go There! My amp is fine I think, but as I was driving home i noticed all of my Door Panels were Rattling, then I tried rolling down my windows, and they sounded like they were being drug threw a rock Quart scraping up against who knows what. Then To Top it All off, All 4 of my door speakers quit working!! Regardless i'm ticked and their Audio Dept SUCKS!! I will get it taken care of tommorow though!!!
