Alpine type S 5x7's.
Alpine type S
I was going to get the type r's but then i read something in here about the sensitivity on speakers. Especially if you are running lower wattage (stock headunit). The type S's were the most sensitive and had pretty good freq response according to the specs. I have never heard a set though. I just got a good deal on ebay and though "go for it".
Also, I tried a search, but didnt find much. If anyone can help, I need a detailed instruction on how to remove the front speaker grills on the doors. I have seen pictures of when they are already off. I would like pics of where to pull first. Im more just scared to go pulling and break one of them. After that i can figure out how to hook them up with the harnesses I ordered.
What kind of improvement over stock should i expect?
Thanks again,
Bartak1

Just go slow, pull straight out easily, and try not to bend the grille outward to much and you should be fine.
You should have a nice noticable difference over the stock speakers. The stockers are made with price in mind, so they are cheap and not much though put into them. Should be a nice difference
Well, I installed them. Super easy just as you stated. I even bought the metra harnesses so I could just plug them in. Not impressed at all with the sound. Very "tinney" sounding. Nice crisp clear highs and you can tell that they go lower but the bass and mid are completely gone. Very disappointed with them. Im sure they would sound better if I had more power to put to them.
Does anyone know how much power the stock 6 disc cd changer head unit puts out? I know the single disc ones put out more power from older posts but nobody every says how much these put out.
Any suggestions on a different set of speakers. I dont mind experimenting a little...
Bartak1, how do I contact you directly? I tried clicking on your name, but it said I havent been a member long enough?

Factory HU? 10 watts MAYBE, thats pushing it.
Id guess with some good EQing you would be much more impressed, but with a factory HU, that is hard to do. Even a little more power could be OK.
chuckyb07*AT*hotmail.com and you can get ahold of me.

You should never run Alpine speakers off a stock head unit. Alpines are awesome, but they need more power then the stock can provide. I am an alpine freak, but for cost reasons I decided to go with the Kenwood KFC-x680 6x8's after reading the comments on crutchfield. They are more sensitive, and have a wider frequency range then the type S's and R's. When I add an amp and a nice set of component speakers to the front, I'll just move the Kenwoods to the back and power them off the HU as I won't really need them for anything more then rounding out the sound some. I'm not a kenwood fan, but I am very happy with these speakers.
Something else you might want to try before changing out those speakers is throwing some dynamat into your doors. Alpines love them some dynamat, and it makes a night and day difference in the overall imaging. Do a search in the forums here for how-to's. It's not expensive or hard to do, and it really does make a world of difference.

Do you suggest doing the whole door or just around the speaker area? Im really not interested in pulling the door panels off of my truck even though I have read that it really isnt such a bad job. I just didnt want to get that far into things...
Should I just get the "speaker kit" that dynamat offers or should I get another kit? Maybe a larger kit?
Any help would be appreciated,
Ghost
Bartak1, I will shoot you a message later, thanks bro!
