few ?'s for the audio guys
few ?'s for the audio guys
hi all.. was wondering if you could give me your input on the best jl audio set up.. i have 2006 f250 supercab. i was thinking about going with either 4 12's or 8 10's. also what jl audio amp would be the best to power each of those.. iam also trying to find speaker pods for up in front of the windows. where people put gauges id like to put tweeters in there.. any help would be great.. thanks
I have no idea on the JL stuff.
For the tweeter pods all I've ever seen are custom fiberglass jobs. Pretty easy if you have the time for a small challenge. Go to www.fiberglassforums.com and search around you'll find plenty of help over there.

Next, I don't know if there is a question of need here, but I don't think you will need that many of these in your truck. Two 12's would probably sound perfect in your truck. Eight 10s, I wouldn't know where you would sit with the size box that would take if you built it to specs.
Amps. If you want to go with an all JL setup, I would stick with the slash series amps and whether you go with 10's or 12's, you will either need one or several 1000/1's. I had a setup with two 10" W6's with a single 1000/1 and it was fantastic. Power is power really. You want to give them what they ask for and maybe a little more, but not much.
There would be some multiplier that begins to give me a headache to even think about, when you want to figure out what it would take to drive something like eight 10's. You would probably need 4 1000/1, but I really don't know. You will need some additional power as well. A high-output (HO) alternator and at least one additional battery. You can figure out if you need an HO alternator once you determine how much power you are goign to use for your setup by doing some math. You also need to know what kind of power your OEM Alternator puts out. I posted about that HERE. You should also upgrade the "Big 3" while you are there.
Again, running eight 10s is no joke.
Utilize the 6 P's if you are going to do that....
Proper Planning Prevents **** Poor Performance
I would also check out the caraudio.com forums. There are some brilliant car audio people there. There are some of those folks here as well, but for the system it sounds like you are looking at, I would take a trip over there and lurk around.

x2. And I hope money is no problem for you. Anything worth buying from JL is expensive as he!! IMO. Its going to cost a pretty penny and then some to do what you are wanting to do, using all JL. Just something to remember.

X3. If you are not competing, why do you want that much sound and cost.

That does sound rather overkill. I had 3 12" W6 JL's back in the day with 3 1000 watt amps on it, and it blew the back glass out of my explorer. 4 12s or 8 10's (which would be a logistical nightmare) would be a pain to power
thanks for your help all.. i went and got everything.. i decided to go with 4 jlaudio 13w3's... 2 jl 500/1 amps 2 300/4 amps.. puting 6 inch jl's in all the doors. 3 sets of jl tweeters. 1 set of jl 6x9's.. build and do everything myself.. gonna fire all 4 subs up and inset all the amps into the box... thanks for all your help guys
as long as your happy with it that's all that matters.. obviously you going for more of a show system than audiophile sq system that's cool as long as it turns out looking good.. I know I've seen that f150 that's in all the magazines with like 40 components in it sure it looks cool and I'm sure it gets loud but I doubt its gonna sound good doing so... now I'm not talking like distortion buzzing bad just bad as far as a total stereo sound quality perspective since when building a SQ vehicle less is more. for instance instead of building a sub fill with 8 10s (which I almost did) I'm going for less drivers with more cone area.. like 2 18s.. maybe less and then for my front fill I'm going to use a single two way component set with a 7 inch driver. I once was at the point where I thought the more the better.. like 8 15s and 4 component sets in each door but all that's for show... which is cool but not for everyone. really there are three kinds of setups now
SQ: sound quality, trying to get the best imaging and flattest frequency response possible at a moderate to semi loud listening level
SPL: trying to get as loud as possible at a single frequency. one note wonders. I used to competer in spl but it takes so much work to maximize your SPL that your car basically becomes useless
Show: a system setup that isn't really setup to have optimal imaging, flat frequence response or high spl numbers.. but setup more to show off equipment and exotic install techniques.. built to look good first at the sacrifice of sound quality and spl, usually having emphasis on the total image and look of the install, these are the ones you see in the magazines and shows

Say what's the deal with the 500/1 amps No matter if you use a 1-4Ω load it still puts out 500w?

Stiff regulated power supply. R.I.P.S. I believe they call it. All the slash amps will put out there rated power over a broad range of loads. But on like the 500/1 it is 1.8-4. So basically same power at 2 or 4 ohm.
