What do you need to make a custom box?

Where can you get all the stuff?
How do you know how much air space you need?

you can use mdf or fiberglass.... or both.
everything you need can be bought at home depot or lowes.
If you are doing a traditional box just custom because it is for a specific application, then just use mdf. If you are wanting something outrageous, then use fiberglass, however, this takes a great deal more skill. I made a fiberglass box once. I got much learning to do on fiberglass fabrication.

You can find the airspace a couple of different ways.
1.) use math, measure your box dimensions (use the inside dimensions of the mdf), and calculate volume.
2.) or if your box is oddly shaped, you could fill it up with some thing... like styrofoam peanuts then put it into something you know the volume of ... like a cardboard box.

You will know the air space you need by looking at the specs on your subwoofer. This is usually found on their website ... you will see a recommended seal enclosure like 1.5 cu ft. and they will also have recommended ported size also. Alot of times the spec sheet will give a minimum air space... and then give an optimal airspace. So just refer to that and build your box to be as close to that as possible. You should also look at the displacement of your sub... you will need to build the box a hair bigger to compensate if you are trying to build the box to exact specs. My subs have a displacement of 0.14cu ft. This is found on the specs sheet as well (online or in your manual if you subs came with one).
