Busted coil?
did you buy them new, if you did, did you break them in propoerly, By breaking them in i mean that for the first 10-20 hours you have to keep the volume down at normal conversation volume, it gives the coils a chance to stretch and warm up before being expose to full bass, if you didn't break them in properly then the coil broke or overheated

Why did they check it? Are you having problems?

The rated ohms of a speaker is only a guideline. It's usually an average of the speakers AC impedance throughout the normal part of the frequency range, because the actual measured values vary throughout that frequency range. The AC impedance is when the amp is driving the speaker. The reading of 3.1 is pretty normal for measuring the DC resistance across the voice coil with no amplification. I'm assuming that's what the shop did, otherwise they couldn't arrive at a figure like 3.1 ohms, because the figure would be all over the place during actual use.

When you slightly push in the cone (nice and straight) can you hear a scratching noise or feel the coil rubbing? If so, it definitley can be a fried VC and it would need to be reconed.
I would also like to know why you had it checked though.

But as 97f250 said, if its a 4 ohm coil, a 3.1 ohm reading sounds fine. The store was probably just trying to make a sale.

Bridged means combining channels of an amplifier for more power. I believe you are talking about series and parallel wiring maybe?
If so, when the subs are wired in series, you should get a reading of around 8, and when they are wired in parallel you should get around 4. Give a few tenths of an Ohm or so.
If the shop tested each sub by itself (they werent wired together) then they should have gotten almost the exact same reading on each sub. If not, something is wrong with one of them.
