Boston Acoustics vs. Infinity

I know both are good, and ive heard steller things about both. Step dad has BA in his Jag and a buddy got Inifinity speakers, they both sound really good, and im in love with the kappa perfect subs.

SOOOOOOOOO, when it comes to 5X7s, here's what im looking at:

BA SL80 - $300
Frequency Response (±3dB in car)
45Hz-20kHz
Sensitivity [1 watt (2.83v) at 1m]
90dB

Infinity KAPPA682.7CF - $150
Sensitivity: 94dB
Frequency Response: 40Hz - 25kHz

Infinity is more efficient, better frequency response, and is half the price...i dont get it. Am i missing something here?

I am unimpressed with the BA SL80's. First, they don't fit in the stock front door locations on my 2006. I had to do some massive trimming to get them to go in. I have since replaced them with Polk MMC570's and have moved the SL80's to the rear doors. With the factory head unit, the Polk's sound nice. They have good bass response and sound very smooth to me. I have now upgraded my head unit to an Alpine CDE-9843 and am very happy with the results. I am not sure if the Alpine gives a significantly better sound, but it is at least more powerful and adjustable than the factory head unit.

Is neither an option?

I have yet to hear a set of Infinity's that really impressed me. I mean, sure, they can sound "pretty good" but nothing fantastic. They are generally fairly flat, and don't have a whole lot of "oomph" to them.
do you know if your ear prefers soft or hard dome tweeters?

I think for $149 from Cruthfield, my JBL P8652's sound pretty good with the little power from the Alpine HU. Getting ready to move them to the rear doors though because I've got a set of JL Audio XR570CSi's on the way. Should be hear next week. They'll be ran by a new RF Punch 75 25 ta Life Series.

If you were to add an amp to either set of speakers the ba's would handle it much better. The infinities are very light and efficient but if you decide to step up the power thats where they would start to fall short. I would consider the ba's if you were going to add an amp. You really want to consider what your final sytem or at least what your goal is in the end it will save you from having to buy twice.

nothinbutaford makes a great point. Looking at sensitivity, power handling, frequency response, and other ratings is needed info, but it has to be taken in context. First of all, the manufacturer may be "fudging" on those specs, and ultimately they don't necessarily make a speaker "sound" good. Knowing Boston Acoustics and Infinity, I would guess that the BAs are MUCH better speakers. Infinity is on a wave of popularity right now, but there is nothing about their speakers that really sets them apart from many other brands. And BA would not put themselves out of business by pricing speakers higher than they need to be. If they are more costly, there is a good reason.

Have both kinds of Infinity

I actually have both sets of infinity Kappa's in my truck. I have the 5x7's in the rear doors and the 5.25 in the front with a surround on them. The 5.25's are the way to go unless you want to go 6". I have had them for 3 years and they are powered by an excelon 100x4 RMS amp. They can handle the power. Just make sure to select the output for the tweet's to the lower setting. On the higher setting the highs can split ear durms. I have had BA in the past and they are also a good speaker, but I love me Kappa's. Just don't get the subs!!! Very "boomy" unless you like that. You can get the Kappas on ebay for pretty cheap. that's where I got mine. BOL on whatever you decide.

Hi have almost the same setup in my '05. BA SX85 and BA S80. I am NOT impressed. Actually, I'm really disappointed. I had kicker components in my 04 GTO and that was killer.! I'm definintely going to look at replacing soon. Hopefully, you'll get better enjoyment out of them then I did.

Good listening..

Well i dont think you can compare full range speaker to components. id be really upset if a set of components did NOT sound better than my BA full ranges.

Both of these speakers generally are known for very bright and harsh tweeters (infinity more so than BA). But...if I had to pick between the 2...definitely BA. They can handle much more power (in the same price range) realistically and sound better doing it. The mids on the BA proseries (which still can be bought new) are phenomenal. Match those with a laid back soft dome tweeter and you could potentially have audio bliss.
