Can Someone Help This F150 Noob?!

Hey guys, Im new around here. I own a 88 Mustang GT and just picked this beauty up. A 1981 Ford F150 60,000 orig miles and in close to mint condition.

This truck is completely stock, even the atrack player. The 1st thing I wanted to do is up date the stereo to a CD player. This task has seemingly went beyond my ablitly and so to you I turn.

1st, there was some odd plug ins and I could not find an adapter that would work, so I though I would just direct wire the speakers in by cutting off the adapters, well this dose not work. The only one to work is the one on top of the dash. They all worked fine before, but the orginal stereo only worked when it wanted. Someone said something about a floating ground? What can I do from here and just directly wire in the speakers? I can take pics if I need to.

2nd, If I cant get the speakers to work, how do I remove the door panels to re run speaker wire? I can not find any how-tos to do it. I do not want to break the plastic.

Thanks for any help at all.

Go to Crutchfield.com and click on the "What fits my car?" link. Enter the information and you will find Kits, Wiring harnesses, CD Players and speakers that fit your truck.

Nice truck BTW

If you have a wiring diagram that came with your new headunit, and the wireing harness that came with it, you should be okay. I personally would go ahead and buy new door speakers, because those are 25 years old.

To wire dirrectly, follow the wiring digram with the HU and you should have a positive and a negative for each speaker. Running wires shouldnt be too terribly difficult, but i havent done it on a truck that old either. And you may want to check your positive and negative leads that power the HU itself to make sure those are in good shape, otherwise you may be fixxing things or replacing them that arent really broken. Check your fuses too.

The easiest fix would to get a HU, speakers and amp. You wont use any stock components but will have to run speakers wires, amp cables, RCA cables, etc., but this will eliminate everything stock.

Thanks for the help guys. I got things figured out. I put in new door speakers and re-ran the wires. The only thing I have a question about now is, how hard will it be to blow the dash speaker? Are they really weak cause that seems like a bitch to replace?

If you can do without them, I would just unhook them and forget about them-just run the new door speakers you put in.

That thing looks like its in NICE condition. Congrats on the purchase.

Thanks. This is my second F150. The last one I had was an 84, 6inch lift 33inch tires. I wrecked that one (T-boned a Z71 doing about 65mph) and swore I wouldnt own anouther. I picked up my Mustang and had the urge to get a truck and this one came along. 60,000 orginal miles, everything is stock, the truck is in close to mint condition.
