Help with my system
Last month my 2002 Lariat Scab's 6-disc in-dash CD changer started spitting discs at me & giving me the infamous "Bad Disc" message. Now that that thing's crapped out on me, I decided to put in a new HU & I started lurking the audio forums. Two weeks later, I'm thinking new speakers, amp, and sub to go with my new HU. Unfortunately, I'm an audio idiot and my buddy who did all my installs in previous vehicles lives 9 hours away (and probably won't work for beer anymore).
So I thought I'd run through what I'm considering by you guys & hope to get some good feedback or at least get pointed in the right direction...Only thing is, I'm a poor graduate student & will be buying most of this stuff piece by piece over the next 6 mos, so bear that in mind. Also, I don't want to shake the cab, I listen to lots of music from Texas country to alt to rap, so I need it to hit, but not too hard.
HU: Originally I was thinking Alpine CDA-9856 as it looks nice & has the iPOD input (guess I'd have to buy an iPod though since nobody makes any accessories for my lousy dell jukebox), but I've been eyeing the new Jensen DIN dvd player (vm9020ts). Even I know enough to realize that jensen doesn't have a great rep, but mobile video would be nice as I go on a 6-9 hr trip every couple of weeks. I worry about how much audio will suffer though.
Front speakers: Components seem to be way to go and I've looked at the 5 1/4 speakers - Kappa 50.7cs and Polk MMC5250. Boston acoustics is out of the price range as are Focals most likely. I have 2 biq questions though:
1. Since I have the older body style, I'm assuming I don't have the pre-drilled tweeter hole like in the new trucks. Where would I install my tweeter then? I'd like to keep everything stealthy.
2. Some posters are saying the 6.5" components are the way to go. Are the 6.5's really that much better? Would I be better off with 6 x 8's or sticking with the 5 1/4's that also use a bracket?
Rears: Leave 'em alone. Nobody I like rides in the back seat anyhow.
Amp: I don't have a clue....
Sub: I'm leaning toward a single 10 or 8" sub, possibly kappa perfect (as I said, I don't need much punch). It would be nice to get a custom box to fit under the rear seat, but the JL stealthbox is way too expensive. There are 2 on ebay that come with speakers: MTX thunderform and a carpeted box with 2 kickers inside. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance for everyone's help with this.
