questions on system upgrade

Ok, i need some advice/info/guidance on a system upgrade. As of now i've replaced the factory radio with a 220w blaupunkt h/u and the door speakers with some 6x8 kenwoods. Anyway, i listen to a majority of rock, hard and classic, but also rap and country. I would like to add some good sounding bass to the system that hits ok. Where i need help is on sub type and how many, im leaning more towards just one sub and maybe a large enough amp to power the sub and give the door speakers some extra juice. I prefer to buy the sub and amp separate and build my own box because funds are limited. Around $150 would be good unless this is not enough to even work with. Sound quality is first, I would like enough bass to hit but not over power the speakers. Any input is appreciated.

$150 for both the sub and amp? That is going to be tough to do and get quality.

If you are going to make a box, I would highly recommend the Elemental Designs 11Kv2. It runs $115 shipped. You can pick up lots of sub amps for a decent price. If you are not opposed to used, check out mono amps on ebay. You could find a really good sub amp in the $150 range. I guess my point is, too get a really good quality combo, expect in the $250 and up range.

I did notice in my Crutchfield mag that you can get an Alpine sub and amp combo for like $199. You might look at something like that.

I understand what your saying about quality issues with a budget this low i figured i would run into the problem. What i'm wondering is, is it worth having just one good quality sub that is well enclosed and powered? Most all people I know with subs have them in pairs. What are the pros/cons of one vs. two based on the type of music i listen to? That being mostly rock.
Thanks for the help

Most people buy 2 subs, because a lot of subs are dual 4ohms, and really benefit when 2 dual4s are wired down to a 1 ohm load, taking full advantage of a 1 ohm stable mono amp.

If you are skilled enough a ported 10 or 12 should do what you want, even off of low wattage.
