Question Another question for subwoofers:

What are the advantages of a dual voice coil versus a single coice coil? Are there any?

Dual voice coil subs give you more wiring options than single voice coil models. Usually, but certainly not always, dual voice coil models are built for higher power handling and performance. Nothing is better about them. Usually the DVC speakers are made by reputable brands and tend to be higher quality but they fact that they are DVC doesnt make the quality better.

One other advantage is that you can lower the Oms w/ a dual voice making your amp pump out more watts. Just be sure that your amp can handle a lower ohm setting stably. Old school RF punch amps are very stable at low ohms, like the 100ix or 200 ix, some people claim even to .05 ohms! This is esepcially usefull in a singe sub set up. You can take a singe dual coil 4 ohm speaker and wire it in parallel to drop it 2 ohms and get twice as much power out of your amp. I hope this helps.

Ya quite a few amps even give the rated power at .5 ohms such as some of the old opti drives. Also take note that in many speakers, even the same sized speaker but different voice coil configurations may have slightly different specs.

Yep, after several days research, i think i am going with an Image Dynamics ID 10V.3 D4, A dual voice coil 10". It can be wired to run 2 ohms, which is the lowest my Apline goes. I currently run at 4 ohms, 150 watts, but the 2 ohm load will give me 300 watts. Plus, i added some stuffing to the box the other night. As soon as i can find a sub (no dealers within 100 miles of me, have to shop online) it seems there is a backorder right now. Hopefully, i can be damaging my hearing even more soon!!

What amp do you have? Is it a mono amp or 2 channel?
