System sounds great!!!

Hey thanks for all your input guys. I got my Alpine 9847 and Alpine Type R 5x7s installed today and it sounds friggin' awesome! VERY loud and clear. The highs on these speakers are crystal clear and very detailed. I'm no car audio afficionado but I am very discriminating in sound quality because of my guitar background, and I'm very impressed by this setup. The speakers I was lucky to get on sale for $69.99 a pair at Crutchfield (Normally $119.99 at Crutchfield and OnlineCarStereo). Only bit of bad news, I need to send my deck back and get another because pressing on the volume to access the tone controls doesn't work!

Those Alpines are still on the Crutchfield site for $69.99. And the regular price is not $119.99, but $199.99. They are listed under 6x8.

Hey Kitt, no amp, just the HU powering the speakers. It's EXTREMELY loud. Driving with both windows down at 75 MPH the sound is loud and crystal clear on 18. 20 is the highest I will run it because it gives me a headache! I was shocked how loud this HU was compared to my last.

You will soon blow them, they need alot more power than your HU has.

• 200W Peak Power
• 40W RMS

Underpowering a speaker will not blow it.

Those things are getting like half of their rated power anyway, not to bad.

First the type R's that are $69.99 at Crutchfield are the Alpine Type-R SPR-574A...8-35 watts RMS, and a peak of 140 watts. So how will this blow the speakers by driving it with a HU??

I is much easier to blow a speaker with low power. If it handles say 50watts rms and you feed it 25 of distorted power it will blow, and fast, but if you feed it 80 watts of clean power it wouldnt. That said as long as you dont crank it till it sounds like poop you would be fine with low power. So when it sounds like poop turn it down and then turn it down alittle more, because you cant hear all the poop....

01vert, it doesn't clip until 22 or 23, so I am playing it plenty safe with the volume. Driving around windows up it's at 12-14 and windows down 16-18. Occasional bursts of 20 when I want to annoy someone nearby.

Nice to hear, just wondering, if you had the audiophile system before? and if you did is the front "sound stage " worse with the tweeters lower and blocked by your leg. I just keep wondering because that is a great deal for those speakers.

Underpowering speakers doesn't blow them, ever. Otherwise turning your radio down would kill them. Just don't turn the music up so loud that your speakears distort ( AKA be a moron) and you'll be ok.

This "underpowering" nonsense got started because of the fact that so many people burn the voice coils(otherwise called blowing speakers) and ruin their speakers by overdriving their amplifier into clipping the signal to the speakers. When this phenomenon occurs, the amp can produce MUCH more than its rated power into the speaker. And during this phenomenon the clipped signal prevents the speaker cone from its normal movement, thus preventing proper cooling of the voice coils. The "underpowering" bit comes from the fact that this almost always occurs with a head unit or low powered amp. Someone abusing the volume **** does the trick. An appropriate amplifier for the situation doesn't have to be overdriven. And, as mentioned, underpowering a speaker will never hurt it. It's a combination of user ignorance, carelessness and abuse.

Thanks guys. 01vert, I had the crappy stock XL system with the glorious AM/FM radio. The highs from these speakers are great. Anything past about 3 on the treble setting is piercing. Go for the speakers, there's tons of high end and clarity. The lows are pretty thick too while still being clear.
