Replace OEM sub speaker, keep OEM sub box
Replace OEM sub speaker, keep OEM sub box
I have a new 05 super cab Lariat with Audiophile. I’ve been searching around these boards for about a week learning all I can before I do a major speaker upgrade and amp. I’m hoping to keep the stock Audiophile HU because I prefer the factory look and a few of the features, but if the sound doesn’t satisfy I’ll pull it. For speakers/amps I’ll probably go with Alpine all around.
A lot of smart guys here – you’ve been very helpful to me already without knowing it!
Here’s a new idea I haven’t found in my searching: I have the OEM subwoofer under the rear seat. I understand it has an 8” speaker, and an amp attached. I’m wondering if I’d do better by keeping the factory sub box but replacing the 8” sub in the box (maybe fit a larger one), and replacing the amp. Just about any aftermarket component is going to be better than anything OEM, but I like the idea of keeping the OEM box.
What I’m after is more on the side of high quality precision sound, not max decibels or teeth rattling bass.
Look forward to your commentary.
Thanks

Yeah, you can switch out the factory sub, but, you have to make sure that the new aftermarket sub you choose matches the cubic feet of the OEM sub box. As long as you do that and run clean power (at least 75% of the sub's RMS power rating) you'll be happy.
