questions about crossovers

i just bought a eclipse amp with an crossover and i was planning on getting the memphis m class five by sevens with the crossover. i was wondering if having two crossovers would be a problem or would it be better.

thanks

I have the same thing, just set your Amp to HP (high pass) and it will send the high/mid freq. to your speakers. The crossovers on the speakers will filter out anything it doesn't want to go to the 5x7's. But it's a common set up.

The crossovers with your speakers and the crossover on an amp do not serve the same purpose. The crossover on your amp is more than likely a high pass or low pass filter that passes frequencies through to your speakers above or below a single set point, like 70hz. For example, if you use the high pass for your 5x7s, you still need the crossover network that came with them to separate the frequencies above that 70hz for the tweeter and mid. If you did not use the crossover that came with the speakers and you connect your tweeter and mid directly to your amp, then the tweeter would be getting the same frequencies to TRY to reproduce as the mid would be. Everything above that 70hz point. NOT GOOD. There are amps that have more elaborate crossovers that would allow you to eliminate the speaker's crossover system, but unless it's a really good amp, it probably wouldn't be an advantage to do so, in terms of sound quality. Also, a lot depends on the quality we're talking about. There are some really crummy speakers with some really crummy crossover systems. And there are some really crummy amps with really crummy crossovers. Everything is relative.

I didn't mean "ditch your speaker crossovers" Use both of them. You need them. Just trying to tell you that what ever your amp dosen't filter out, the speaker crossovers will.
