Smile HeadUnit-Speakers

So one way to power your door speakers is to hook them up to the head unit and let the head unit push them with about 20-35 watts or however much the headunit does or another way is to just get an amp and let the amp power them right?

A word of warning about using the head unit to power your speakers; it's not a bad thing if you can be satisfied with low to mid volume listening. At that rate the amp in the HU will not be pushed beyond its capabilities. If you like your music loud and clean, then a dedicated amp is a necessity, along with some good speakers.

would 4(one in each door) pioneer 4 way 6x8 speakers that have an RMS of 2-50 be good with an amp that pushes 50x4?

It depends on your experience as to whether you would think Pioneer 4-ways are "good". If you had experience with nothing but stock speakers, you may find the 4-ways an improvement. I am 50 years of age with over 30 years experience in all kinds of audio. I've heard them all, so I would believe the 4-ways sound terrible, in comparison to what is available for very little more money. And, amplifying a poor speaker will NOT make it sound good. Anyone who has heard crystal clear mids and highs from a quality speaker would feel the same. In my opinion, if quality sound is an objective, which is usually the case when people begin adding amps, etc., some things are NOT a bargain at any price. The Pioneer 4-ways fall into that category. Think about it. A pair of speakers that you can buy on ebay for less than $50. Let's be serious. I'm not out to bash anything just for the sake of it, and I have no agenda against Pioneer. It's just that these speakers are so popular among beginners who know no better and it pisses me off that a company takes advantage of a "gimmick" to suck people in. They use the "bigger is better" theme because newbies actually believe that a 4-way is "better" than a 3-way or a 2-way. NOT TRUE. I doubt that you could ever find a person with a love for quality sound, with any knowledge and experience to speak of, that would own a set of these speakers. There's a reason for that. There is no way that a person "needs" a 4-way system to begin with, much less one of such pitiful quality that WalMart sells them. For twice the money you can have some pretty decent speakers that would sound good with an amp. Sorry for the rant. Just trying to educate the inexperienced. I believe that's what this forum is for.

Now, having said all that, everyone should get what they want, need and can afford. Maybe the Pioneer 4-ways are just right for some people.

Thank you for that information. I dont know very much about speakers so i just kinda see what looks good or sounds good when you read about it. Do you have a preference for a certain brand/model for 6x8 speakers and a model/brand for an amp to push that? I am also going to go with kenwood kdc-mp4028 headunit. I want to get some really good speakers that have very very good sound and bass so i dont have to buy subwoofers cause that gets expensive with the underseat box, subs, amp, wiring, installation. Well please hook me up with a good setup.

There are a number of very good 5x7 2-ways. Alpine, Eclipse, JLAudio, MBQuart, Infinity, Pioneer(but not the ones that are $50), Kicker. There are others. If you can afford them, I would recommend a decent component set with a separate crossover. There are even some of those in 5x7. The extra money is well spent. However, there are some companies taking advantage of the component craze and making some pretty crappy components, as well. I heard a Ford that had Alpine SPR series 5x7s and an Alpine 4 channel amp that sounded quite decent. A little "thin" for my tastes with no sub, but what was there was decent. If you are a newbie, then stick with a major brand and you should be OK. Listen to some stuff at a shop if you can. Avoid the "fleamarket" brands, like Rockwood, Blitz, Pyramid. Geez, there are so many. And, the companies count on you being impressed by the glitz and the looks, but it doesn't mean a thing when it comes to quality.

I am probably going to get 6x8 but do you know any certain model and brand of speakers and amp that would go good together? I want some that have good bass so i dont have to get subs. Just lead me in the direction of a good setup and i can work from there. 6x8=Brand? Model?
Amp=Brand? Model?

The speakers that are available are actually 5x7s. The mounting is made to fit into the factory 6x8 cutout. I did some searching, and a great deal right now for 5x7s is through Crutchfield. They have Alpine Type-R SPR-574A for 1/2 price with full Alpine warranty. $99.99 and their shipping is like $5.95. You can find those on ebay for about the same price, but not from an authorized dealer with warranty. And shipping for speakers on ebay is usually about $20-30. Crutchfield has awesome customer service, and they will send you adapters to connect your speakers, and detailed installation instructions for your vehicle. A great amp to match those is on ebay. Item#5776637581. It's an Alpine 4 channel for $140.

Are you sure that those are good speakers? The RMS is only 8-35 and peak is only 140 watts. What makes those speakers so good? would these be better speakers than the ones you picked out?

How much power a speaker will handle has very, very little, almost nothing, to do with the quality of the sound. There are speakers that handle 250 watts RMS that cost $25 and sound terrible. That RMS rating is a warning to the user as to how much power the speaker can withstand continuously without suffering damage to the voice coil. If you give those speakers 35 watts continuously they will be very loud and crisp. Understand that when you amplify speakers and crank up the volume to a humanly tolerable level inside your vehicle, it does not mean that the amp and speakers are operating at anywhere near their RMS ratings. I would say that the Alpines and the Infinitys are in the same quality range. I've had both and prefer the Alpine "sound" myself. And, the Alpines are a great buy right now. I don't intend to imply that they are the best speakers out there, but as far as 5x7s you won't find much better. The Infinitys are good as well. They are 2 ohm speakers and you will have to be sure your amp is OK to use with them. Most 4 channels of decent quality will be. If sound quality is a concern above what the 5x7s can offer, then move up to a high end component set with separate crossovers and be done with it.

O i get what you are saying, so i should go with the alpines because even tho the rms is low the sound will be clearer and better, and 35 watts is plenty. since the rms is 35 what amp should i get? one that pushes 40x4?

That Alpine amp on ebay would be perfect. 50x4 RMS capability.

Yes, all the speakers are the same size.
