System sounds bad.....
About 4 months ago I built a sealed box and installed one 10" I was originally trying to make the box big enough for 2 10"s but only got about .9 cubic feet and the subs were calling for .6 I figured it wasnt enough so I didnt put both in. The sub is a alpine V12 and is 75w x 2 (the amp looks bigger than that but Im pretty sure its only 75) I bridged it and turned the gain down but the sub would distort at higher volume or deep bass (I never got the head unit into the positive bass settings) The sub is a rockford fosgate punch xlc. I dont know if the sub just isnt very good and it cant handle the power or if something else is wrong. Anyways, I think the voice coils are now fried. It still hits but I can hear it distorting and rattling when there is a voice playing. I wired it all myself and the power is coming straight from the battery. If it wasnt grouned good could it distort it? Or could the box be too big? I dont know if this discription makes since but I would really like some feedback about what the problem could be and would be happy to answer any questions that could resolve the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Are you running the amp bridged? If you are then you could be giving the sub as much as 300 watts. I don't believe that the xlc are rated anywhere near that. Sounds like you may have fried the coil.

I have a fosgate 10" xlc in the back of my truck also. And it sounds great. I'm also using a fosgate 400watt amp to push it. While the amp is larger than needed for this speaker, it can still surve a good purpose. If the amp is turned down and not having to bust its butt to run the speaker, the sound is going to be clearer. My box is about 3' long and 2' wide and just a little deeper than the actual speaker. I bought the box from Circuit City and it sounds awesome. I also replaced the factory speakers with Polk speakers. It just doesn't any cleared and louder than this.
Yeah the amp is bridged. I guess i just need to get a better speaker that can handle more power. If I didnt bridge it, it never hit very hard. It never sounded right to begin with so I dont know what the problem is. I was thinking maybe it was the install or the box but I dont have a clue.
Cheer up, Larry. At least now you can start all over, and you won't be making the same mistake twice, right? Alpine makes a fine product, but not subs.
First, check this out. Go to "Basic Enclosure Calculations":

I'm running an RockFoz250a pushing a 10" JL sub inside a stealthbox. The amp gain is nowhere near max; neither is the "punch" dial. And that sub hits hard if I crank it.
There's plenty of great subs out there that aren't gonna cost you an arm and leg. Start with the JL's at a local dealer and give them a listen. Good Luck!

Well I have the same sub in my harley F-150 and mine is great. You should not be hearing any thing from the sub if there are only voices playing all you should hear is bass.
What i am thinking is that on your amp you have got it on high and low pass .
Or do you have a built in cross over?
Well if you do you should put it on the low pass and all it will send to your sub is the bass.At least that is what i did.
Hope this helps?
