Cool Volume Questions?

Well I've had enough of the sub-par sound out of my factory CD player. I've got two 8" woofers and a 250 watt amp. How much volume to I need for a box (to fit under the ext cab seat) and what size of porting would you guys recommend?

Any information would be appreciated.

You should start out by researching the subwoofer manufacturer you are interested in using and research their volume requirements for their subs. After you determine that, you will want to take one of two actions: Buy a pre-built box with matching volume or have someone build you a custom box that meets your volume requirements. You can pretty much count on most 8's requiring .30 to .50 cubic feet per speaker. If you can get a box with .70 cubic feet of airspace, you will be o.k. That will be a sealed box, though. Ported boxes require significantly more air space, therefore are very limiting for our situations. Some of the prebuilt box manufacturers include:
Q-logic http://www.airesearch.com, Mtx http://www.mtxaudio.com, & JL Audio http://www.jlaudio.com. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info f150intally...Since it's tax time I'll probably build the box myself. Any advice on box fabrication?

Do a search for "box specifications" or "box dimensions" on this forum. If my memory serves me, there was some guys that were offering their dimensions but you had to email them. Most of the boxes are build out of particle board (MDF).

5150: Another fine site for enclosure calculations may be found at:
http://www.eatel.net/~amptech/elecdisc/caraudio.htm

Go to the scrolling menu on the far right side and drop down to "Basic Enclosure Calculations" This presents extensive information to you, and provides several calculators so you can just plug in your numbers and get results calculated for you immediately.

Hey Sundog7....
That site is great. Somebody must have had some time on their hands to build that place! After using the box calculator, I'll have about 1 cu. ft of volume with a 3" x 9" port tube. Should work for my needs. I'll post here when I get the box built and post pictures to my website.

Thanks again for the info!

True, True. Do you know if the Ford single disk player has a preamp out? If not then it's off to Circuit City I go for a new head unit.

No they don't, but if you're going to get rid of that stock cd player, I may be able to take it off your hands (cheaply).

I've got the 6-cd changer/mag removed from the center console you can pick up cheaply.
Try sundog7@comporium.net if you're interested.
