My Sub is P!SS!NG me off

I have a 10" Punch with a 300 WATT Kenwood AMP (all second hand). It sounds great - when the darn sub works.

I'm no expert, that is why I love this forum.

The sub is intermittent (plays sometimes). If I push on the speaker, it will play for a lil bit, but eventually quits, as long as I am pushing on the speaker, it will play...

Anyone know whats wrong? I know the speaker is the problem, but can I repair it? The speaker was $350, (new) I got it for free.

sounds like your problem is physical, not electircal; like the voice coil is blown.

It sounds like the coil to me too.

A way to test this is to hook up an ohm meter to the + and - on the speaker. You should get a pretty consistent reading of around 4ohms or 8ohms depending on the speaker.

With that hooked up, push on the speaker like you described. If you see a sudden change in resistance, then you know there is a problem with the coil.

If that’s the case, throw it in the trash and get a new one.

Pull the speaker and check its tinsel leads and connections as well.

SacGyver has the right idea, but the advice is good, but careful with the results they can be misleading. Sac, this isn't meant to offend...

A Voice coil is a COIL, not a resistor, The impedance(not resistance) is meant to change drastically when it is moved(yes a good speaker does this). Impedance varies with change in current (induced or applied).

Jamzwayne, following Sac's advice; if you get "infinite" resistance" then it's bad, if it changes higher or lower, than those readings are normal.

Failing speakers do exactly as you describe, the ONLY thing that is worth trying is checking the braided cable and connections on the sub itself, if you find a kink or break, it can be fixed with minimal impact on the sub itself. -Or the break could be on the coil like everyone else is guessing, then there's nothing to do about it.

Fostby nailed it, only thing to look for with the meter is if the connection suddenly goes "open" or "shorted" when you are moving the cone manually...

Either way, sounds like that woofer doesn't owe you a cent!!

10" punch woofers are pretty cheap, these days, Might be time for an upgrade...

you may also want to tape the wires from the leads to the vioce coil i would almost bet they were stuck togeather that is why one broke i have had a few rockford subs and every one would quit on me when i would take them out the pos and neg lead touched and grounded out and were stuck togeather

Um, you said you purchased the speaker for 350 dollars. That sounds a bit outragous for a single 10 inch woofer. It just sounds like you have no clue what you are doing.

Not necessarily outragous really.
