Sub boxes Vented or Sealed?
Which is better Vented box or Sealed box?
I've been told that vented is more efficient but sealed gives a tighter bass. ------------------ 99 XLT 5.4l reg cab 120" Wheelbase 4 wheel disc/ABS 5 star larait style wheels Toreador red 2tone 3.55 gears 255/70/16 OWL Delta toolbox Eclipse 5340 cd player Memphis ARCS50 component speakers (excellent sound) Sherwood amp subwoofer coming soon More mods as funds become avalible. |
You were told correctly. I have a 10'' MTX sub in a sealed box. Sounds good to me.

Which MTX sub are you using?
Are you using one or two? How much airspace do you have in the box? Did you buy the box premade or build it yourself? I am having a hard time finding a premade box short enough to clear the ledge. ------------------ 99 XLT 5.4l reg cab 120" Wheelbase 4 wheel disc/ABS 5 star larait style wheels Toreador red 2tone 3.55 gears 255/70/16 OWL Delta toolbox Eclipse 5340 cd player Memphis ARCS50 component speakers (excellent sound) Sherwood amp subwoofer coming soon More mods as funds become avalible. |
Okay, MTX Blue Thunder 10''. One. Premade, I got from Circuit City, Q-Logic.

54regcab, I see your still testing the waters on getting that sub for your truck.
Why don't you just buy my Bazooka 8" and Clarion amp, and you'll won't have to ask all these questions.............also you can take the money you have saved and put it on a new toy.......Just in fun.....10-4...dogcam ------------------ dogcam@myf150.com 97 Lariat s/c 4x2 5.4 all mods off, turning it in for a new 00 |
I agree about the Bazooka's performance. I've had both the amplified and non-amplified versions in my past Rangers and present F-150, by the way I have two 8" non-amplified tubes for sale for $40/pair. Co-incidence, I swear!

WOW $40.00 a pair.
Is there anything wrong with them? How much did you have to move the seat up to get them to fit? That is my main hesitation on the tubes. 54regcab,
I had a single 8" Bazooka in my last truck which was a regular cab. It sounded great. Two amps???? I saw your other thread RE : crossovers etc. Another amp would solve your problem. However, if I remember right. I powered the components off of the deck and used the amp for the Bazooka. I used a coil to eliminate the highs........ 54, They're scratched on the outside, but sound good. They fit behind the seat no problem. But they might be 6.5's, rather than eights (sound great, more room, sorry about the mix-up). If you're still interested, let me know and I'll e-mail you too.

Ok ... this is an idiots question so bear with me ... a powered bazooka in the center behind the seat of a S Cab? All you have to do is parallel the rear speakers and run a power line (power antenna lead?) to the sub unit? An 8" fits? Thanks.

Just a thought...
Has anybody tried to put a 6.5" Bazooka inside the center console? This would be a supercab w/ captains chairs. Would one 6.5" Bazooka give the same type of response that a single 8" driver would? Jim ------------------ 1998 F-150 XLT SC 5.4L |
JSCOTT, your question on a 6.5 Bazooka vs a 8", go with the 8" i've been thru 6.5 and the older 6" slaved and unslaved.(both have a history to blow)
Hook up a good amp !00 watts (apprx) to a 8" (RS) (unslaved) and it will rock & roll. Looking for one, e-mail me if you would like a almost new (new under warranty) 8"RS Bazooka and Alpine amp 97 model yr. Prowler, Your question on the powered Bazookas, all you'll need is a power cord from the battery (fused) and that is supplied with the slaved Bazookas and a patch cord is also supplied that will let you splice into any of your speaker wires ( you'll have to know which is + and - and a switch or knob on the back of the Bazooka turned to auto, so when your radio is turned on and a signal goes to your speaker, which your patched into, the bazooka turns its self on automatically....
I believe Crutchfield sends a complete hookup wire and patch cord with our order, if not they run about $10.00. Ask for Ringo if you call Crutchfield, he's up to date on all Bazooka info.......Dogcam any questions, e-mail me.... ------------------ dogcam@myf150.com 97 Lariat s/c 4x2 5.4 all mods off, turning it in for a new 00 |

vented or sealed... hrm i have a pair of Paradigm's at home Mk11se3's and they have very tight and loud bass and lo and behold, they're ported. If its cheap and its ported, it probably wasn't done right. You can't just stick a part anywhere you want and sadly most of the ppl trying to sell me their junk can't hear the problems with their equipment. I'm over at Best buy (not the best place to buy equipment if you need help) checking out a pre-fab ported enclosure and the guy turns it up a bit. "Uhh, that sounds horrible." Him: "We haven't had time to set it up correctly yet." Me: aside to my brother, "do you hear the port noise?" Bro: "What port noise?" Me: "The damn wooshing from the ports that increases along with the bass volume." Salesman: Peers at box. puts head closer. Twists up face. Its obvious he has no clue what the hell i'm talking about. Me: "Bah." I walk off. He suggested I trim the tubes. Almost as helpful as using an eq. instead of fixing the environment, you "fix" the source to make up for deficiencies in either the environment or your system. How many ppl do you know that turn their bass controls up cause the system or env isn't setup with the correct amnt of bass? Almost everyone I know to the point of adding distortion that they can't hear cause they've never heard a system without the distortion so they think its supposed to be there. sigh. |
I must agree most prefab ported boxes are incorrectly tuned.
That goes for many home speakers also. A way to tell if it is even close is to cover the port. With the port covered there should be a dramatic drop in deep bass response. If you can't tell much difference it's probably improperly tuned. ------------------ 99 XLT 5.4L reg cab 4x2 120" Wheelbase 4 wheel disc brakes/ABS 5 star larait style wheels Toreador Red/Silver 3.55 gears 255/70/16 OWL Delta toolbox Eclipse 5340 cd player Memphis ARCS50 component speakers w/tweeters mounted flush in the door panels (excellent sound) Sherwood 35x2 RMS amp for components. FYI...I had a '97 regularcab F150 and had 2 JL 10W6's in custom sealed boxes, one behind each seat. those speakers are dual 6 ohm voice coils. I powered them with a Soundstream 3.0 wired mono. Sounded great but didn't hit as hard as they could due to the small box size. I can get box size info if anyone wants it with pictures. Because of the limited space sealed boxes are the way to go but vented will always be louder if you have the room. I have since bought a '99 superduty supercab and am building a push/pull 4th order band pass box that i will have sitting on my back seat and can pull out easily if i have passengers. The advantaged of bandpass enclosures is you can have less power per db on average, and with good components you can blow the windows out if you want.

SDF250_mn, How are you doing that 4th order box? I haven't kept up with all the different designs since my buddy and I took fourth place at IASCA nationals back in 90. This one had 2 Lanzar 18" in a seventh order enclosure. Good for 142 dB with 1000 watts RMS power. I'm thinking of this same type of enclosure with 8's to fit inside the center console (99 S/C, captains seats). Thanks in advance.

I haven't done the design yet but i am going to make is so i just set it on the back seat and can pull it out easily if i want.
