Another brand to take a look at is Image Dynamics. I had a 10 of there's at one time and they love small boxes and it hit great. Not sure of the mounting depth of their new ones, but if their new models hit as hard as the one I had....I would give them a look.

I know my friend had 2 JL Audio 10s in his F150 (97-99 model I think I'm not sure). But I don't know what kind of box he had. But it sounded really good and hit well.

<5" mounting depth is a tough one. The Image Dynamics IDQ10v2 is a great small box sub but is 5.25" deep. You might have to go with something more exotic to get good performance with that depth. Something like an Illusion, Pioneer's new shallow sub, Blaupunkt, or Phase Linear to name a few.

I got an Audiobahn AWC10T 10" subwoofer and it sets right at 5" deep. It seems to punch pretty hard for a 10. I have a custom built box from plans I got off of this forum, so the space is limited. I packed my box half full of Poly-Fill and it seemed to work the best. It's under the seat of my 01 Supercrew. I paid 100 dollars for it off of

Crutchfield (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Kzwadl8...&search=awc10t)

but I have sen them sell for around 80, but I can't recall where.
