replace front and rear?
replace front and rear?
i have a 99' 150 s-cab...after putting in my subs i will need a good set of component speakers, but will i need to replace both front and rear speakers or just the front. i dont want it to sound really messed up if i still have stock speakers in the back
You will be ok just replacing front, but it will sound better with both replaced. Most of what you hear while driving is from the front. Many amps, for this reason, send more power to the fronts than the rears. The rears are basically only for fill.
Some people put component sets up front and put coaxial in the rear. Thats what I did.
If you don't like it, you can always replace the rears later.

Coaxial/2-way: these have all the speakers mounted into a single piece. These have a tweeter mounted on the woofer, and allow easy drop in in place of the factory speakers.
Triaxial/3-way: These again are a one piece unit. These have in addition to the tweeter and woofer, a midrange driver. It is supposed to improve midrange response. Again, an easy change out by removing factory and dropping these in.
Components: These systems have separate woofers and tweeters and a crossover. These provide better performance than coaxials. The tweeter can be mounted separate from the woofer allowing improved sound imaging. These are not as easy to install, and often require some cutting of the vehicle to place.
Example: many people place the woofer in the factory speaker location, and mount the tweeter in front of the door handle. Obviously, a cutout has to be made to mount the tweeter in this manner.
So basically you would be placing components(more expensive/better sound) up front where most of the music the driver hears is coming from. In the rear you would place the coaxials since they are generally just fill. This would save money and still provide excellent sound.

I put components in all 4 doors of my SCREW.
I didn't want to be selfish, I figured I'd let the rear passengers get some awesome sound too, especially since the Bass was gonna rattle their teeth loose sitting back there
