Focals...?

I've had some Diamond Audio Hex (500s) components up front for a couple of years, recently blew a mid, and am considering changing them out for some Focals soon.. probably some 136V models. Anybody here run Focals? What do ya think?

Amp driving the sats is a RF 300..... 4x50..... crossed over at 80hz, 18db slope.

If your going to go Focal check out the Utopia polyglas. They are a really great sounding setup and worth the extra money. Or you could go with planars like I did. If you want to look at the pics check them out in my gallery or the thread I made in this forum "completed kick pics"

Yeah, those kicks you posted are really nice! If I remember correctly, you made your forms, didn't you? If I were a little younger and wanted to spend the time (like I used to), I'd do something like that....... now I'm old and wanna be inside on the couch with my HT system more..... LOL
I am checking out the Utopia Focals and that's what I'll probably go with...........just hate to put that kinda money into speakers for a truck I may only drive 2 hours a week......... I guess the Utopias may change that, huh?

They are definitely worth the money if you are wanting to obtain top notch sound. As you said, you very well may find yourself spending more time in the truck. I know that since I added the planars I seem to make up more excuses to drive the truck. I spend 2hrs per day minimum in my truck at this point just commuting to and from work so it sure helps justify the extra time and effort to go with the planars.

Focals

I installed the lower end 6.5 polyglass Focals in QForm kicks and they sound very nice. BTW- you can push lots of power to them and they.....and you... will just grin !

The more power you have the beter (up to a certin point then it just ebcomes useless).

Rember I have 660+ watts AVAILABLE to the Utopias (note the key word is available). I do not always send that much to them in fact it is high unikely that I have ever sent that much to them ( I honestly don't know as I haven't gotten out there and tested it) Anyway its good to have more power for the dynamic peaks in the music. As I am sure you have noticed your music is not all at one volume, there are highs and lows in and the extra power is nice and give you a clean sound when you hit a high point in the music, shuch as when symbols crash.

Get the idea?

Also, if helps to keep noise of the system when you have more pwoer than needed because you can keep the gians lower than you normally would (this may or may not make a difference in each individual case)

The Utopias are nice, but I do wonder if I could have gotten away with the PK, maybe maybe not. But the suttle sounds they bring out are amazing, I have heard stuff on these speakers that I have never heard before (even on the polyglass' and some other 'good' setups).

And speaking of Pink Floyd...The Dark Side of the Moon sounds amazing (money, time are probably two of my favorites).

Yeah, I hear you about the power.....I've always been into larger amps ever since I "discovered" Fosgates in the mid '70's...... Headroom in your wattages is what gives you that extra definition in your highs and mids that we "old farts" may actually need!
Looks like I am going with Focals of some type and I'll probably go ahead and change out my sat amp while I'm at it. I like matching my amps to the speaker specs and fine tuning the gains to get me that head ringing symbol crash........ or the alarm clock on DSOM/PF that'll wake the neighborhood ....!!!
SQ is what I'm after and that's what I'll get or I'll change again!!! I've enjoyed the DA Hex as they've been some great speakers and given me what I wanted...wouldn't be shopping if I hadn't crapped out a mid......

Oh man that alarm clock in Time is is simply amazing along with all of the other clock sounds. I'll have it turned up listening to the clocks at the beginning and then I'll foget exactly when the loud alarm comes on and man its ear piercing!

As for the amp I would get one with a little more power than what the speakers are rated. IMO that is the way to go with selecting amps for skeapers and its well worth the extra money too.
