Talking Kicks w/planars pics!! Check em out

Well you guys I know a couple of you have been waiting to see these now since before Christmas. I only have the passenger side done at this point because I didn't have enough warm weather to get both done. Now since it has gotten cold it looks like it may be another couple weeks before I can glass up the driver side. I have gotten the passenger side prepped for either paint or vinyl but haven't yet decided which to go with. Anyway here is a couple pics of the passenger side kick. I will try to get a few pics of process when I build the driver side kick for those of you interested in a DIY project. Takes probably in the area of 8-10 hrs to build them up and sand them down. And yeah I know I gotta still make the press fit grills but that is a project for after they are both done.

Sorry for the dry fire there. They are doing server migration to the site so I was unable to post the pics to my gallery. I will check again later and get them posted I promise.

Email them to me if you don't mind. Snausages01@yahoo.com I have a 3 or 4 meg limit.

Not to high jack your thread, but I was talking with my audio dealer today about subs. I keep mocing towards the simplier route. What do you think of the JL stealth box for our trucks that go in the center console?

I haven't heard that particular enslosure (at least the one for the F-150) but I have heard the one they make with a single 10" that fits in the Dodge in the same place and as far as SQ it is pretty damn good. It does not play extremely loud but loud enough to keep up with your mid high combo and give a balanced sound. If you are planning on changing out the W0 that comes in most of the stealths with one of the better subs and throwing the juice to it then you should be pretty happy with it because you will be able to get more out of it and even better SQ. I will try to post the pics once more and if they still have it down then I will go ahead and shoot em to your email.

Looks very good! Well except I think the color is just barely off, but its hardley noticable.

Yea I wish I had the time and patience to do mine right now, but hopefuly around summer time I can it right. The Q forms are nice for what they are and what they cost, but the sweet spot is right about where I would put the sub between the dash and consle. So hopefuly I can move that over to the drivers side and up a little more when I do it.

The good thing about these is the way they image. With the placement on these I get all vocals and instruments from center stage dead center on the dash. The only thing I need time correction on is the 8" midbass in the doors and then only if I run the x-over point up high enough to blend them with the planars good enough for flat response. It seems below 200hz they aren't one side bias but I really need to let them run out to about 350hz to get the drop off close to where the planars pick up. The planars have a killer response curve ranging from 400hz-20Khz. The thing I like about them is there is virtually zero delay across all frequencies because there is really little to no diaphram weight.

I found the image best if the direct path is firing into the opposite rear side corner of the truck. Now if I can put in a little bit of acoustic damping foam inserted into the rear side windows then I think I can get even more amazing sound from them. But that is for another day.

Man that is some serious looking speakers.
I got curious about Planars and did some research on those types of speakers.
What I found is one company makes them called MagnaPlanars, or some name like that.
They obviously must ROCK!! Some type of electrostatic speaker.
You probably dropped a nice penny on those bad boys.

I would like to hear those babies rock some Stevie Ray Vaughn!

You know I appreciate the over inflation quite a bit but I am in the process of trying to prove to the masses that better sound can actually be achieved with less. You probably would be surprised if I told you I have less than $200 dollars in the set and that includes the materials to fiberglass and bondo the kicks!

Not to take anything away from this set or any of the extreme high end component sets out there but put it this way. I only have about $240 in the midbass/midrange/tweet setup and I would be willing to put them againt the most expensive car audio set made.

In short what I am trying to say is that planars can work in car audio contrary to many different people's belief (including RC) and that cost is not everything, install is the most important factor.

Again my total cost for midbass to tweet at completion should be in the area of $350 including x-overs, notch filters, linkwitz transforms, install materials and speakers combined. In other words much less than the top rated comp sets go for these days. I may even sell plans to the final product. For the prices some of these companies are getting for comp set I should be able to sell a complete setup installed for much less than what they are wanting for just a high level comp set.
