I wish to replace the stock speakers in my 97.
I"m running an aftermarket cd player, (not huge wattage), but bigger than factory am/fm cassette that was in it).
I'm looking at the Pioneer 6 x 8's. Anyone purchase/utilize them?
Are they a simple bolt in?....Do they sound substantially better than the factory speakers?
thanks in advance for any/all info.

drag79, A lot depends on what importance you place on audio. The Pioneers are a direct bolt-in replacement and depending on which ones you get, they will sound somewhat better than stock. However, with just a HU and this type of speaker(they have terrible crossovers and tend to sound harsh in the high frequencies), if you like to "crank it up" for extended periods, you might be disappointed. HU amps are not well suited for this kind of thing, and neither are the lower priced 2 and 3-way speakers. Just my opinion.
thanks guys.
Thanks for the replies.
Reason I've got a bug up my ***, is I just tossed in some real cheapies in my daughters 94 taurus. (hers were blown to chit with her aftermarket cd player).
IN either case, it made a HUGE difference, (granted, old ones were blown, but)., her car actually sounds great inside. (even got a hug out of the deal, so it must've been ok).
I don't really 'not' mind the sound of the stock pickup speakers, but I just figured, I"d put something better in there. Speakers, although they've improved their performance/sound immensely since the 70-80s, still aren't the best, so figured by adding some decent aftermarkets, it'd sound better.
I've got a killer stereo, (well, actually a few), in my home, and I do spend a fair amount of time in the truck, trailering to far away race tracks during the race season, so would like to get the 'best' I can for a reasonable amount of caching.
Again, thanks for the responses.

www.crutchfeild.com is a good source of info to research speakers... I swapped put the factory speakers on my f150 with Infinity reference and I put a Kenwood exceleon cd head unit. Made a huge difference. This will tide me over till I can do the whole stereo ...
hope this helps

drag79, Sounds like you are an audio buff so I would say definitely change your speakers. Just my 2 cents worth based on personal experience with speakers of this sort; step up a couple of price ranges and get something like the JLAudio VR or XR cxi series(the cxi is coaxial, they also have the csi; very costly component set that sounds awesome with correct amplification), or MBQuart makes a nice 5x7/6x8. Also the top of the line Alpine is very nice when compared to the "tinny" sound of the cheapos. There are reasons some of these speakers cost $49 and some are $200 or more. And most of those reasons translate into SQ. My guess is if you ever heard the JL XR570cxi, the thought of buying a Pioneer 2 or 3 way would vanish. But everything depends on your budget, needs, etc. Good luck!

Sound/music buff, for sure. Frugal, even MORE so.
I spend MOST of my play money on the race car. Second comes stereo equip/stuff for house. Thirdly, diecast car collection. Rounding fourth is anything I get a wild hair up butt for. (i.e. speakers in truck)..........
I'll check into those other ones, and find out if I can 'get a listen' somewhere.
Thanks for all the help, guys.

I put Clarion 5x7/6x8's in my doors. I wasn't really expecting too much difference, but figured there would be some. I was very surprised. The highs were so much clearer, brighter. I could here things I wasn't hearing before... I wouldn't trade them for anything... I know the ones I got are around $150 or$160 from Crutchfield, but I got mine for something like $90 from ebay, new in the box... Look real nice too... I thought I had some pix of them in the truck in my gallery, but I guess not. Whenever they're all done updating I need to update my gallery...
