alternative to wood (boxes)

Hey, can anyone name some alternative materials for making subboxes other that wood? My dad suggested one of those rubbermade box things, but i dont think the thin plastic would hold up, and it would probably vibrate alot.

Also, if there isnt a alternative to plywood, what thickness of plywood do I need to get?

Do NOT use plywood or a rubber maid box!

Generally there are two main materials that are widely used mdf and fiberglass. Usually 3/4" MDF woks well from most applications, with the exception of a few like the w7s. There are other materials that are available like ledbased metals and compressed plastics and many mant moew; however, the price of the box when using these materials will most likely be a LOT more than the sub would cost.

So I say used 3/4" or 1" MDF (medium density) or HDF (high density)..MDF is more than fine, but the thicker and the more dense the less the box will resonate in the average system 3/4" is more than enough...

Hope this helps,

yep, you need to use MDF.

Using a rubbermade box would sound HORRIBLE.

Plywood cracks easily.

Come on now. We once used a huge steel trash can to make an 18" bazooka tube for the stereo shop (he he mainly for laughs of course) and actually we were quite surprised at how hard the thing hit. Although I must say that metal being hit with a sledge hammer sound was kinda odd to associate with the 808 kick drum type bass. Kinda reminded me of a seeing "Stomp" performed at the Fox Theater.

In all seriousness, stick with the MDF or HDF 3/4" thick and you can't go wrong. If you would like you could build one from fibergalss as well but you will find it is much more expensive to do so.

Build it out of fiberglass, but it will take much longer than building it out of mdf. Also you have to deal with the fumes and trying to sand on something that is harder than wood. You really gotta love subs to build a fiberglass box..

I know

Ok, i have a few other questions
How much space do I need between teh box and the back of the sub?
Also, how much space do I need between the bottom of the seat and the sub? the seat has metal on the bottom if it makes a difference, and im not making it downfire.

Thanks guys

Just enough space behind it so the sub can ventelate and enough space outside just so you can mount the sub and and as long as it has enough room to reach full excursion.

Really just depends on the subs.

These days some drivers have over 1" excursion so obviously 3/4" wouldnt cut it here. Also some subs may require or suggest more space behing the sub for proper ventilation.

LMAO. Somehow I don't think the homeless need sub boxes.
