Xtant subs any good?

A friend suggested these subs to me.

sounddomain.com has a 2 for 1 deal going on the 10"s.

Are they any good? I would probably only be using 1 hooked up to a JBL 300.1 amp...but using both is a possibility

They are what you would expect from a $35 sub. Similar to the MTX 4000s.

One nice sub will put a hurtin on 2 decent subs. I'd get one solobaric or elemental design or something like that.

So what would you get if you were on a sub-$100 budget for sub(s)?

Preferably 10"

I still have a while to think about this, but Im trying to learn as I go

My new head unit is on the way though, and will be installing that as soon as it arrives

John,

For what you have to spend I think that the Xtant's will do great for you. Xtant is a well respected company for their amps and have simply never been known much for their subs. I think it is more of an attempt for them to get a foothold in the sub market more than the sub being of cheap quality. Truth be told even the most expensive sub on the market costs typically less than $75-125 to manufacture. The most expensive part of a sub being basket and motor assembly.

Deus sais it best when he compared the sub to the MTX but I feel they are more on par with the 6000 series as opposed to the 4000.

I know they arent the best out there, but Im just hoping they sound decent

If they have crappy build quality, well, I only plan on running 1 at a time so I will have one as a backup

John,

You should be fine and get tons of use out of them as long as you.

A. Put them in the correct enclosure (very important).

B. Keep a resonable amount of power on them.

C. Properly set your amp gains and crossover points.

D. Don't abuse them with the volume ****.

A: I will probably be building my own enclosure. What do you mean by correct?

B: I plan on using a JBL 300.1 amp, which I think should handle them well.

C: That's something I still have to wait on when I get the setup finished and everything.

D: I doubt I will. I dont care to have my music so loud that everyone around can hear it. Im the only one that needs to hear it. I usually turn the volume down when other cars are around and the windows are down.

By correct enclosure I mean if you go with a sealed box then make sure it has adequate air space taking into consideration sub displacement. Also make sure that the box is perfectly sealed to prevent air leaks. If you port it make sure you use the correct port size to correctly tune the enclosure.

Sounds like that amp would be a good match up so free and clear there.

Setting up x-over and gains are most important so be sure to get assistance if it is your first time or feel you need it.

Sounds to me like you will do just fine. You appear to have the needed common sense to preserve and enjoy your equipment for years to come.

Operator head space is the key factor 95% of the time in destroying equipment.

One more question (for now :P )

I noticed that most of the pre-made boxes for under the backseat are downfire boxes...

should I try to make mine the same way, or would it be ok to have it facing upward into the seats? (with a bit of space between the space and top of sub of course).

You will get better performance by firing the box downward. That is the reason all those other companies making the boxes fire them down

Hmm, well it would make my build a touch more interesting, but I think I can do it.
