Should I put anything BEHIND the speakers?
Should I put anything BEHIND the speakers?
Just ordered my replacement speakers and will be installing them next week. Should I worry about putting anything behind them in the door or just plop them in (they are 5x7)?
Way back when I installed my last system (15 years ago....) you could get these foam things that acted as baffles that you placed behind the speakers in your doors. I've looked through most of the posts here and haven't seen any reference to that.
What do you guys recommend?

The foam baffles are still around. XTC is the brand name for them. If you feel the need to protect your speakers from water then feel free to get some of those. A little damping mat behind the speaker and around the mounting baffle is also a good idea if you don't want to do the whole door.
I put a Dynamat Extreme speaker kit (two 10x10 sheets per kit) behind the front speakers and it made a world of difference. I got the kit at Best Buy for $20. I am going to do some baffles too because I am getting some water on the speakers when it rains hard or I wash the truck.
The rear speakers are a different story. They are mounted so that they are off the door panel (raised ring about 2" thick). I am going to put some Dynamat Extreme on the mounts when I install some new speakers in the rear.
