Installing speakers and head unit aren't that complicated. Especially if the speakers are drop in replacements. If you can follow directions, you can do it. When you get into amps and subs, it's a little more complicated. When you are actually doing your install, you can always post specific questions and get good advice. Be precise in your descriptions.
As far as brands, there are dozens of good ones. I would advise you to audition and buy something that fits your budget and needs. We are all different. Some of us are happy with a factory system, some have extreme systems. When you say you want to save $$$$$, you have to decide what that means. Does that mean getting a bargain on a $800 amplifier, or does it mean you only want to spend $800 total? Saving $$$$$ can mean a lot of things. Good luck!!

I am redoing my audio system right now. If you want to save money the key is to shop around online, NOT at the local tweeter or circuit city, trust me you will pay like half as much by buying online. Here are some good websites to shop around at

check em out. As far as brands for HU I like Kenwood, Alpine or some thing along the lines like that. everything else, well there are lots of brands man. Check out my signature thing down the bottom to see what I have installed so far as to audio, and did it myself to save loot!!
good luck let us know what choices you make

For a first timer.. I would strongly suggest ordering your equipment from Crutchfield.
www.crutchfield.com
With every head unit purchase.. they will provide you with installation instructions AND free install kit and wiring harness.
I think they even give you adapter plugs for factory replacement speaker purchases. Anyway, they're the only ones that will give you an EXTENSIVE amount of information that will greatly help you in your first time install.
But if you have any questions at all.. we're always here to help.
GOOD LUCK

Well, I got approved for financing at "car toys", with one year interest free($1500 limit). any input on cd/mp3 HU. two 10"subs, and i also want to replace the factory speakers.and 2 good amps, one to push the two subs and the other to push all four speakers. "Car Toys" does a price match guarantee with crutchfield, so that seems good. my problem is i'm pretty good with instructions, I just dont want to screw everything up, and at least installation is covered forever, and if i decise to buy a different f150 they will do swap out the HU for free, and everything else(lspeakers, amp, subs) for half-off(labor).Also the installer wants to put two 10's behind the seat(in a custom box)...any thoughts...I'm out...Peace!!!

thats what I say for the HU, and for subs look around there are alot of different brands out there. What kind of music do you listen to? I have one 10" rockford fosgate sub, 10" becuz i like it tight becuz i listen to alot of rock. As for speakers shop around once again! I did all my install myself, it can be a pain in the butt and no matter how much you plan ahead you will run into snags, wires that are too short or wont snake across the carpet or not enough space, whateva, but it is doable, and it feels good when its done.

Sounds good $1600 is alot to drop at once, I did mine gradually but hey if you got it why not. What are the subs 2 10" mtx T6104A? And what are the two amps and what wattage and channels and such will you be running?
does the $1600 include the install for all this, or are you going to do it yourself?

CARPE.. is the only reason you're doing the Car Toys deal because you've got the financing there?
Would you even consider trying to install everything yourself?
Here's a box for 2 10" subs to fit under the back seat of a SuperCrew for $115..very good price I must say.

Install the head unit yourself, install the back door speakers yourself, I bet you could even install the amps yourself without any problems. If you're wanting your component speakers installed in custom locations.. it might be a good idea to let a shop do that.
Personally, I would try to go with a higher quality product than the MTX Road Thunder stuff. You could get all your equipment online and get the midline MTX stuff for as cheap (maybe cheaper) as the prices you put up for the Road Thunder stuff. (not to knock Road Thunder or anything) OR you could go with different brands and come out even better I bet.
$1600 is a decent amount of money for a system. It doesn't look like he's killing you with installation costs... but I would check out other places before making that big of a purchase.

I understand now. I live in Dallas now.. from East Texas originally so I understand the heat/humidity situation.
So installation is a big priority for you. With that in mind, I would definitely buy the stuff where you're getting in installed.. they may not take too kindly with you buying something elsewhere and bringing it to them to install.
