Lightbulb Component Speaks in the F150

Has anyone put 6 1/2 components in the F150 Supercrew / HD ? I know the size in the doors in 6/8 but thats just too small , I want MORE!! Im looking at the Infinity Kappa Perfects and I know its not gonna be easy to get them to fit...any ideas or experience? I just ordered a new system with the tax return:

Kenwood KDC-MP22, Satellite tuner, Fosgate Power 350 amp for the Kappa Perfects all around, Infinity Basslink X and Clifford Matrix III alarm....and monster cables....

Thanks!

They will fit. All you need is a spacer/adapter for each speaker. The spacer can be made from MDF or you can buy them made of plastic. I've got a set of MB Quart 6.5"s in the closet waiting on me to install them. I'm using the plastic spacers.

FYI, If you don't know already, the rear speaker locations are a little more shallow than the fronts. This probably won't be a problem using the Perfects.

I put a set of Infinity 605cs in my doors (reg cab).
Got them at circuit city along with a 3/16" thick adapter plate.
I had to drill some holes in the plate to make it work.
Also the crossovers that come with the speakers I Zip tied to the cross-member behind the speaker.
If you use the plastic adapters put dynomat or something similar under them to keep them from resonating (if you put some watts to them they make the doors buzz).

xbwfo has a great point. Regardless of which adapter you use, Dynomat it to keep down the buzzing.

Cool

I installed 6 1/2" MB Quart components in my '01 SuperCrew. No cutting, no adapters, just drill a couple of holes for the speaker to mount to the door...

Be sure to install sound deadening material to the entire door, right up to the speaker itself.

The rear doors are shallower than the front, but it did not prove to be a problem in my install.

Good luck and be sure to post your results...

Thumbs up thanks

cool, thanks for the info, soon as it all comes and I get the plan of attack all thought out I'll post the results. This week it should all start rolling in and hopefully this weekend I can start the install. Only thing I think Im gonna pay to get done is the alarm with remote install, never did that before.

Another question, where are all of you installing the tweets at? Can they go on the A-pillar(?) or somewhere up that way?

I have a friend at a local shop that recommended installing them in the windshield pillar (is that the A-pillar?) just above the curve at the bottom. Friend says the imaging is incredible at that location. I am installing mine there.

Question Component wiring

I'm thinking about installing Focal 6.5" in the front door of my supercab. They come as a component set with the tweeters. What type of amp wiring/set-up should I use? Should I get a 4 channel amp and run 1 channel to 6.5 and 1 to the tweet on each side or does the crossover that it comes with take care of the splicing and only require 1 channel per 6.5/tweeter (could use 2 cahnnel amp that way)?

Generally, as the tweeter is raised the sound stage is improved, but the imaging is degraded. I didn't see a good spot to put the tweeter, other than close to the door handle which would have been too close to the driver's ear IMHO. The A-pillar would have the tweeter very much off-axis to the same side listener. I put both the tweeter and mid-range in a custom adpater I made in the factory location.

pa2000xxxx,

The Focal components should come with a crossover which may be flexible to be bi-amplified which is what you described, separate channel of power to each tweeter and woofer. Unless you are competing, two channels of power should be fine and the corssovers should handle that for sure. One input for each set of tweet/woof. 50-150w is appropriate depending on the particular set chosen. Which Focal set did you decide on?

FWIW,
I JUST had my Focal Polykevlar 165K2s installed on Friday. We discussed the only two viable mounting options in the 2001 F-150 SCab, those positions being in front of the door handles and in the window frame bouncing off the window. My installed said that the sound and imaging when bouncing off the window is AWESOME. In the end, I chose to go with the door handle position, mainly for the reason that I would rather NOT advertise the fact that I don't have a stock system.

Later,
Jeff

I just put in Focal Utopia 165Ws in about two weeks ago. EXCELLENT sound. I flush mounted the tweeters into the door just in fron of the handles. Sounds GREAT!!

Infinity 605cs in my doors too! Very nice speakers!! xbwfo, did you end up using the -3 connection for the tweets like I did? The treble was so strong it felt like an ice pick to the ear after a couple of minutes, hehe!,,,,98
