Anyone from the Mobile area?

We're seriously considering moving to the area for retirement. My wife likes the looks of the Daphne area. I told her I won't live near alligators!! How are the bugs? Everyone who has a swimming pool has a dome over it.

mobile area

i lived in Mobile for 6 years. I currently live in the Pensacola area, but both areas are very similar. The Daphne area is a very nice part of Mobile, good schools, great people, and the area is rapidly growing. Now the bad stuff. If you like 90 degree weather with 90% humidity, you will love the South. Walk outside to get the paper and the humidity hits you like a brick. As far as bugs, mosquitos are normal but what is really amazing is the for to five week period around August when the love bugs come out and the front of every car on the road is covered. The bugs aren't that bad, but cleaning them off your vehicle is a chore. Hope this helps. I love the South, but............

You're an Air Traffic Controller? Where at? Mobile? I was a Controller in the USAF from 74-80 and have been a Controller with the FAA from 81 to present. I'm retiring this year and we are considering moving to the Mobile area. My only experience on the Gulf coast was 6 months in Biloxi back in 74.

I was an air traffic controller in the Army from 2000 to march of this year. I just got out of the service and just got a job offer in Louisiana....might be moving! I would like to be a little closer to home but its a good start on the outside.

Was the job offer from the FAA, DOD or a private contractor? Anything you need to know give me a yell. The most important thing I can tell you is get your feet in the door.

It is from the FAA, I have sent all the paper work back that they sent me and now I'm just waiting to hear back from them. (fingers crossed)

If the place the FAA wants to send you to is a small facility then ****** it up. The traffic will be less demanding and you'll certify faster. Then once you're done you can bid elsewhere. It is much easier to leave the smaller facilities than the larger ones. One thing you need to think about is consolodation of facilities. The FAA is trying to close facilities and combine them with larger ones. They have consolodated many facilities over the years.

Another thing you may want to consider is the DOD. There are many DOD facilities around the country and many Military installations use both the military and DOD civilian personnel. Dover AFB and McGuire AFB use both. I believe they are GS-12s and many of the DOD facilities pay more than the FAA.

One thing you must also consider is the cost of living of where you may be moving to. You may wanna consider what is more important, location of where you want to live or how much you wanna make. Most busy facilities are in high cost of living areas.

Alot has changed in Biloxi since 74, especially in the last 2.5 years. I dont live in Mobile, but about 30 minutes away. I go there all the time. I wouldn't mind living there. The Daphne area is a nice place. But, as mentioned earlier it is hot and humid down here.

well i live in daphne, if you want to know anything about it let me know... got thousands of pictures as well... as for gators i havent seen any in my part of daphne but i know the town north of daphne gets some.... fairhope is also a nice place but expensive.... daphne has terrible traffic lights which are designed by idiots... especially one by the old walmart... ill calm down some. but other than traffic its a nice quiet city, not much goes on here.

if you have any questions let me know... i know a lot about the mobile and baldwin counties
